  • Not Quite What I Was Planning: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure
    • Rated 4 stars

I'm in this book! Page 2! I got in by participating in a 6 word memoir contest and they sent me a first edition (not the one shown here). I flipped through to find myself first, of course, but was enchanted and moved by all the fascinating and clever life stories people were able to tell using only six words. It's a really great concept and I'm proud to be a part of it.

This was a terrific book, full of subjects for further research and consideration. Malcom Gladwell is a wonderful story teller and communicator, bringing the reader a really personal "thin slice" of each person he introduces into his explanations. I'm tempted to read it again (after just finishing it for the first time) because there's so much to get out of it that I feel like there's still more to learn from re-reading. Highly recommended.

  • The Real Frank Zappa Book (Picador Books)
    • Rated 5 stars

What an excellent bio! I didn't really know much about Zappa before reading this. I just figured he was a weird dude, probably on drugs, who made a lot of way-out music. As it turns out, he was a weird dude, who didn't really like drugs, and made a lot of way-out, well composed music, AND was pretty brilliant to boot. He's got a number of fascinating opinions about the philosophy of the world at large and it really makes for a great read above and beyond the enjoyable background stories about making music over the years.

  • The Illuminatus! Trilogy: The Eye in the Pyramid, The Golden Apple, Leviathan

I seriously loved every moment of this. The disjointed narrative threw me a little at first, but I quickly got into the swing of things. It was such an enjoyable trip, and it got me thinking about all kinds of things I'd really never paused to consider. Anything to shake the humdrum and get in touch with the hodge-podge is a welcome addition to my library!
