Georgiana

I'm the wife of a fantastic man, and the mother of a teen and two tots. While I love to write books, reading is my not-so-secret addiction! I know, I know, my shelf looks pitifully slim, but I'm only including books from this year. The books you see have been read in 2008, or are in my TBR pile. If I listed everything from the past, my hard... more »

  • Dark Pursuit
    • Rated 5 stars

This is my favorite Brandilyn Collins book so far--and that's saying a lot! The masterful plot and fast-paced action kept me flipping pages and looking over my shoulder way past bedtime. In fact, this is a book you'll want to read in one sitting, if possible, because once you start you will NOT want to set it aside. Dark Pursuit is on my list of favorite books for the year--highly recommend for those of you who enjoy suspense, and for all you chickens out there, turn on all the lights and do whatever you have to do to read this book!

  • Field of Blood: Jerusalem's Undead Trilogy (Book 1) (Jerusalem's Undead Trilogy)

This well-crafted and imaginative novel from Eric Wilson combines incredulous legends with just enough historical and biblical truth to make even bloodthirsty vampires seem plausible. The story opens with the demise of Judas in the field, incorporating both biblical accounts, in order to set up the false resurrection of the dead that comes later.

From the Holy Land to Romania to the state of Tennessee, the story goes back and forth between Gina Lazarescu, a Romanian girl with a past she seeks to understand, and a cluster of the undead who are out to destroy her. Though Gina is the main character, I do wish we'd have had more page time with her in order to empathize, and perhaps a tad less with the vampires. Her troubled childhood makes her responses true to life, and leaves plenty of room for redemption. The end really kicks into high gear as Gina heads toward a showdown with the undead, and turned out to be my favorite, un-putdownable part of the book.

Though this isn't the type of novel I normally pick up, Field of Blood turned out to be an enjoyable read, especially since this is my first Eric Wilson book. It certainly won't be my last since I'm interested to see how the rest of the series plays out.

  • Single Sashimi (Sushi)
    • Rated 5 stars

I knew I'd love it! The cousins are back in Single Sashimi, the 3rd book of the Sushi Series. This story features Venus Chau, who's not only a beautiful and brilliant game designer, but also a serious Type A who loves her own space. Camy does a fantastic job exploring family dynamics that center around a strong matriarch--a.k.a. Grandma. Even if you haven't read the first two books in the series you can jump right into Single Sashimi with maximum enjoyment.

First off, don't let the YA label fool you--Michelle lives up to her Edgy Inspirational Author title in a way that infuses a strong dose of reality into the reader. INAM digs into the nitty gritty of teen life in a way that's not commonly seen by we adults. Issues like violence against women, teen pregnancy, and alcohol abuse are faced head-on in this fast-paced story. The best part is, the story is unapologetically Christ-centered! This would be a great read for a mature teen, and one that Christians can share with their friends and know that the gospel message is going out. Bravo, Michelle!

  • Suspicious Minds: A Novel
    • Rated 0 stars

This is an incredibly inventive book, and full of humorous moments as well as moments that made me shiver and go, "Eww!" I loved the lit tone, combined with mystery and crime scene cleaning. My only regret is not having read the first book in the series, Hazardous Duty. You don't need to read the first one to pick right up with the heroine, Gabby St. Claire, but I'm sure it's a fun read too. If you enjoy light mysteries, you MUST read Suspicious Minds.

  • House of Wolves
    • Rated 0 stars

This book more than lived up to my expectations with its secret societies, rare books, and life-or-death puzzles to be solved. An amazing blend of truth and fiction! In addition to the action, there's a very human element with a flawed family, and characters who do bad things but with strong, believable motives. Readers put off by the gore in the first book in the series, Illuminated, should be less squeamish this time around. While there is violence, the detailed gore is absent. A very satisfying read, and "page-turner" only begins to describe how fast you'll devour House of Wolves.

  • Isolation: A Novel
    • Rated 0 stars

On a rainy day during nap time, this book arrived on my doorstep via UPS. Sadly, I did not know this and Isolation got sopping wet. Thanks to my hair drier and a few days laid out on a towel, the book was saved! And it's a good thing too, because immediately the setting hooked me in and I found myself way more concerned for this isolated fictional family than I ought to be. It took me less than 2 days to barrel through the book like a madwoman, and I was scared witless when I read at night. One thing that didn't connect with me was the ending, but on the whole it was a good read. If you're a fraidy cat, best read this with a buddy and a great big dog at your side.

  • A Sister's Hope (Sisters of Holmes County #3)
    • Rated 0 stars

The third and final installment of The Sisters of Holmes County series, by Wanda E. Brunstetter is a satisfying way to end the story. This is one time where you definitely have to read the first two books in order to follow along. Admittedly, I had great anticipation for this one because I couldn't wait to find out just who was behind the attacks on the Hostettler family. Also, the romance between Martha and Luke had serious obstacles to overcome in order to work out. If you're a fan of Amish fiction, this series is a must-read.

Totally fun read--so much so that I read it mostly in one sitting, which is saying a lot for someone like me=) In addition to the dishy British accent of the male lead, the heroine was quirky and delightful even if I wanted to shake her every once in a while. The spiritual arc was funny (with a sublte message), and there were even taped-on bumper stickers and crooked car fish involved! Not that I'm going to tell you how they were involved because you'll have to read it for yourself.

This book has THE most satisfying spiritual thread I've read in a long, long time. Truthfully, I even shed a few tears because I wasn't prepared for the twists and surprises along the way. There are few books where a large cast with several POVs can come off so well-rounded, and this is one of them. Make sure to read the author's note at the end because Nancy Moser ties it up in a way that makes you pause and think.
