What makes you want to keep coming back to the world and characters in a series?
It’s an interesting question for me as a writer, since I’m also an avid reader. I love to discover a new series when I read, because it means a favorite place and familiar, interesting people whom I can visit over and over again. I enjoy getting to know the place and people better with each book, uncovering new details, quirks, insights and ideas as time goes on. And as you can see from my shelf (which is only a tiny fraction of my real-life shelves), I really do love reading series!
As an author, I want to create that experience for my readers of “coming home.” I want the characters to seem more real and multi-dimensional with each book, and for readers to find new and fascinating details out about the fictional world I’ve created with each new adventure. I want them to meet new characters and learn more about old friends. I hope that they’ll enjoy exploring the world I’ve imagined, and begin to see a realistic depth and complexity. Most of all, I hope the people and places will become favorites that are like greeting old friends when a new book offers the opportunity to return.
What draw you to a new series? Do you like series better than stand-alone books, and if so, why? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
