This book along with Jon Krakauer's book "Under the Banner of heaven" gives you a pretty scary view of the fundamental aspects of Mormanism.

I tried not to read this book because of all the hype around it...but in the end couldn't resist and found it to be funny and touching and inspiring. Great book.

Ms Bank has a clever way with dialogue and her insight into the hidden aspects of conflict between people was great but the plot didn't move along well enough for me. Also I was confused by the grown children....stuck in the middle of the book....where the heck did they come from? I hope and assume Robert but clearing that up would have been nice.

I like Alice Hoffman as an author , I love the way she writes such beautiful prose. I wanted to read the book because the idea is so true that one event can impact and change so many lives......but I didn't really like this one very much. I found it hard to believe that Ethan would have changed over night so drastically. I think it would have helped to be in Ethan's head more to be able to understand the change in him and to identify with him more. I wanted to like it but in the end I finished it saying "Hummmppphh" instead of wishing that the story would go on. Maybe it should go on Ms. Hoffman......

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, loved the history and the cultural references but then I read the second one and it was not quite as good. Then in my OCD way I HAD to read the rest of them and good gracious the man does go on and on. All of this series could have been condensed into one good book. But then again...why collect royalties on one when you can stretch it out into five or six!?

Absolutely the BEST book on the art and craft of writing. Wonderfully honest. I don't read Stephen King's "genre" but reading this book caused me to respect both him and his craft. Thanks for the inspiration Mr. King!
