Half of the day they call me "Athena" (my real name), the other half "Mom". Flubberwinkle is a name I created when I couldn't find a decent nickname for my blog, flubberwinkle.blogspot.com..... I get paid to dabble with computers.

How to Eradicate Invasive Plants [Paperback] [2013] Teri Dunn Chace

A clearly written guide to plants that can take over, this book surprised me by featuring several species that are sold in nurseries as decorative as pesky plants. I ended up more often viewing this book as a field guide to weeds than a manual. The first suggestion to eradicate weeds was almost always either yank or smother, so I quickly became less interested in that section. Might make a nice gift (along with a weeding tool) for a person who has bought a house with an unkempt yard and delusions of grandeur.

James Herriot is leaning up against the Rainbow Bridge, reading this and laughing his ass off. And Gerald Durrell is rounding the corner, determined to discover what the fuss is all about. When a London real estate agent and his lawyer wife decide to move to the country and, unwittingly join the slow food movement, there are struggles, tears, piles of various kinds of manure and bogs of mud, but most of all, raucous laughter.

Ender's World: Fresh Perspectives on the SF Classic Ender's Game

Although I was soundly disappointed that this was not an extension of the Ender universe, but rather literary criticism on the series itself, this book does serve an important place. Works of science fiction that are "hard" science fiction (i.e. spaceship and aliens stories) often have a hard time garnering the sort of critical attention and acclaim that might be afforded to other genres. If you think about it, the science fiction you studied in school, if there was much of it, was probably limited to utopian or dystopian reflections of earth such as Brave New World or 1984, direct social commentary such as Fahrenheit 451 or The Giver. Having literary criticism such as this moves science fiction ahead as a genre, and will perhaps inspire instructors to add it to syllabi.

    Saints (Boxers & Saints)

I'm glad to see this comic, which I originally read separately, sold as a boxed set. Ideally, in my opinion, these two volumes would NOT be offered separately, and maybe would be set up in a book that had one story from one cover and the other set in the flipped side. I'm glad to see this comic, which I originally read separately, sold as a boxed set. Ideally, in my opinion, these two volumes would NOT be offered separately, and maybe would be set up in a book that had one story from one cover and the other set in the flipped side. (I remember buying Maus I: My Father Bleeds History and then finishing it late at night and having to wait out the hours until I could run out and buy Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began. To me, those weren't two books, either.) As someone who didn't know much about the Boxer Rebellion, this double perspective offered an emotionally affecting and effective look at both aspects of the story: one from the rebel side, and another from the perspective of a Chinese Christian convert. Both sides were easily relatable, understandable, and equally tragic. Perfect as a starting point for history classes, Gene Yang fans who loved American Born Chinese, and interesting enough to grab the casual Graphic Novel reader who just happens to grab this book off the shelf, Boxers and Saints will be around for years to come.

    The Cute Girl Network

Appealing artwork, an interesting concept, and a sense of humor make this graphic novel a fun romp for the older young adult crowd. Some school libraries may want to avoid stocking this for its occasional frank sex talk, but it should be fine for public library collections.
