I can't stop adding "to be read" books! I see so many I want to read and I have to add them. Maybe I will get around to them all one day.

    Barnes & Noble has a lot of books at 40% off because they are moving - you & Sambo might want to check it out. I just bought 3 bags full of books - and really good books too (a lot of strong classics and philosophy). Plus I met this guy there that is as crazy (or cool depending on your POV) as I am - we talked and exchanged numbers.

    On the bible thing, I just put up the actual copy I have. The other one should be off the list. By the way, my bible reading is going slowly - very slowly. Genesis and Exodus were interesting. Leviticus is a bunch of rules about all kinds of things - it's actually been called the "priest's manual". I can't say that it is in any way interesting. But I've promised myself that I'll read the entire book (OT & NT).

    On the Stuff White People Like, sure I'll borrow if you'll let me. Seemed like it would be a quick read when I read some of it at a store. Seemed funny. I notice several people saying things like "this book nailed me and my group of friends...humbling", stuff like that. I didn't notice that from what I read. Oh yeah, when you read it, put hilarious commentary notes in there so that when I read it I'll see your notes and laugh. You know, something like "Goats on the Wall" or "Elrond Hubbard".

    Have you checked out http://www.paperspine.com/? It seems like a good deal - Netflix except with books. Basically if you pay $15/month you can have up to 2 books out at a time and don't have to pay shipping costs. The only problem I see is that I make notes in the books I read almost always. Wouldn't be able to do that with Paperspine. I guess if you found something that rocked your world, you could buy your own copy. Anyway, it is something I am considering. I've done a pretty good job of reading the books I already have. When I get that stack even shorter, I am going to very seriously consider Paperspine. I bought a book the other day and it was $30. I really wanted it, yet that is alot of money to pay. That is the equivalent of 2 months of Paperspine fees.

    ha ha thanks. Glad you like. Yeah the inner thigh of the divine ain't too bad. I thought it was funny saying I am a milky-white Great Pyrenees and what I did with the books was play games with them then rip them up. Yeah that was good, good one me; why thank me.

    Funny you mention smoking - I had a drug test today - passed, which I knew I would. I haven't done anything in ages. Hell I barely drink now.

    But one guy was fired yesterday for failing the test. It is undoubtedly the stupidest thing I've seen in ages. He was the best, most knowledgeable employee. There was no, that is ZERO, evidence that he was some kind of stoner or addict. He always busted his a*s to fix all problems, and was usually well ahead of everyone else in even determining there was a problem. Plus, his wife is disabled and she was on his insurance. They are spending about $1000/month on medication for her. Another couple of victims of the war on marijuana. What a true, sad shame.

    Enough of that noise - so sad. Yeah sure there is always the argument "just don't do it" or "it's illegal so you know not to do it". Okay, I'm taking a stand here - I don't think it is okay for anyone to be bombed out on any kind of substance. But I have had moments with marijuana that were just plainly magical. I would defend that in all cases. You know me Cheryl, I was never one of those "my arse is bolted to the couch, smoking bowls all day" kind of users. At most I was smoking a small amount maybe twice a month. Hell toward the end I wasn't even smoking, I was eating it. I could go on, but the point is that my own experience informs me that marijuana can be used in moderation, just like you can drink in moderation. Sure, you can't do heroin in moderation or methamphetamine or other substances. But a person can ingest marijuana in moderation. The guy at work that was fired is also an example of that. And the drug policy is this monolithic "you fail 1 test = you're fired". I'm sure they could give me several at least moderately reasonable reasons for the policy, but the fact that this guy was functioning at the high level he was on a consistent basis, in itself, at least to me, proves that he, at least, was able to enjoy marijuana in moderation, to the point where it did not adversely effect his job performance.

    And yes, there are people who cannot enjoy marijuana moderately, just as there are those that can't enjoy alcohol in moderation.

    One more thing - when Sarah and I were in counseling, our therapist ask me about drugs, and I told him honestly that, yes, I did smoke marijuana occasionally. I expected the normal "well you shouldn't do that" angle. But he surprised me and said that he too agreed that marijuana could be used moderately. I didn't even have to argue him into the point - he just basically said it immediately. AND FOR ANYONE READING THIS NOTE AND THINKING "YEAH, BUT YOU WERE IN COUNSELING, SO WHY SHOULD I LISTEN TO YOU PONTIFICATE ABOUT MARIJUANA" - DRUGS AND INTOXICATION WERE NEVER AN ISSUE BETWEEN MY FORMER WIFE AND I. OH YEAH BY THE WAY, YOU CAN BE STONE SOBER AND STILL BE A F*CKUP. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A STONER TO DO STUPID THINGS. PLENTY OF PEOPLE PROVE THAT DAILY.

    Hey, do this as a kick - take my profile and like add just random stuff to it. You know, read it and wait for inspiration to hit and just add in whatever flows through you. I swear I will post whatever the result is. It'll be fun. Then later we can revise it. It'll be an evolving profile, that is also an experiment in writing.

    And if you don't change your profile name to Afro Groove Moon Mother, then you are a spineless bag of bacteria that has grown putrid in the midday sun, teeming with little insignificant bacterial worlds that will never amount to a damn thing. Do it. Bring the noise.

    Hey Cheryl. I hope this finds you and yours well. It's such a beautiful day here. I know what you mean about Japan. I find the culture absolutely fascinating, from times of the Samurai right up to today. I fell in love when i read Memoirs of a Geisha and must admit to being surprised that a man could write so tenderly considering the subject matter. What a beautiful book. Definitely one of my favourites.

    The "Merle" tag is decontextualized absurdity. It means nothing except I thought it funny to name a tag Merle. I have always thought the name Merle was funny. The word "turtle" is pretty good too. Must be something to the "ur, er" sound. I suggest you amuse yourself with idiosyncratic tags of your own, that only make sense to you. We'll find ways to ameliorate the utility of the communal tagging scheme. I will bring Shelfari to it's knees - wait, websites don't have knees. Small things, small things, and the ability to enjoy them.

    I did but did not find anything that really jumped out at me. Right now I'm enjoying Shelfari without having joined a group. Probably eventually I will join one. But you know from experience that when I get involved in something like that, I expect a lot. Maybe I am hesitant because it might not meet my standards of interaction. But again, Shelfari is interesting to me right now in the way I'm enjoying it (group-less).

    "Lonesome Dove" is on both my to-be-read and to-be-watched lists. If you've still hungry for more McMurtry when you finish, I would highly recommend "Telegraph Days" (Annie Potts does a fantastic job with the audio version).

    I've had a few people recommend "Black Swan Green", so I'll definitely have to move that up on the list. Ken Follett -- that man can write some big chunky books. Sometimes I miss being a teenager and having those long lazy summers to hang out and read as much as I like. My to-be-read list is going to have 1,000 books by the time I retire, at this rate.
