I've been on a very long bout of fluff reading - especially fluffy niche mysteries. I won't apologize for that. I figure it is better for me to be reading than to not be reading because the books I... more »

  • Aunt Dimity Digs In (Aunt Dimity (Paperback))
    • Rated 4 stars

Yet another fun Aunt Dimity book. In this one Aunt Dimity is once again a semi-major character in the plot of the book. While being confined to the pages of a journal when communicating, she still manages to pull people together and make her "family" larger. This installment took place entirely in Finch, centered around her old cottage that was left to Lori in the first book of the series. Emma and Derek from the second book have supporting roles in this book as well.

I do not know what it is, but it seems Atherton has hit upon a magic mix of romance, suspense and the supernatural to make me devour her books. It is a definitely a "feel good" cozy!

I love this series. The second book didn't grab me so much because Aunt Dimity was mostly absent. The series makes me think of "Ghostwriter" for adults and in book form :-) I won't say much for fear of giving away the secrets, but if you liked the first book in the series, keep reading!

Pretty average for the series. I do appreciate DMD mixing up her formula a bit in the books, but by book thirteen the characters are starting to feel slightly stale to me. But, if you have enjoyed all the books in the series up to this point you'll likely enjoy this one as well.

  • Sweaters from Camp: 38 Color-Patterned Designs from Meg Swansen's Knitting Campers
    • Rated 4 stars

A nice book for fair isle knitting inspiration. A variety of projects from vests and sweaters to hats are represented in this collection. There is also good introductory information at the beginning on designing and the basics of stranded knitting, including steeking.

A fantastic collection of contemporary Nordic knitting design. Some of the patterns are a little over-the-top, ready for the cat walk, but every time I paged through the book more and more little details of the designs popped out at me. While some of the garments are constructed differently, I suspect the designs will hold up quite well over time, especially if you choose colors to suit you or the current trends.

  • Ethnic Knitting: Discovery: The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and The Andes
    • Rated 4 stars

A good companion to Knitting in The Old Way, Ethnic Knitting Discovery is perfect for those who are shy about jumping in with both feet and designing their own ethnic-based sweaters. It provides three different kinds of worksheets to guide you through the number crunching and instructions for knitting at the level that best suits your knitting style. Each ethnicity section also includes a great smaller project to help you get familiar with stitch patterns and create a swatch that doubles as a useful item. (based on a digital ARC)

  • Aunt Dimity and the Duke (Aunt Dimity Mystery)

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book without all the great characters from the first Aunt Dimity book. However, I only got a few pages in before I was in love with all the new characters. Aunt Dimity did not play a large role in the novel, but it was still a fun read and I am looking forward the next books and the return of some more of the characters from the first book in series.

  • Knitting in the Old Way: Designs and Techniques from Ethnic Sweaters
    • Rated 5 stars

A great addition to the fiber arts library for those who like to draft their own patterns or heavily modify the instructions of other patterns. There are no numbers and sweater patterns in this book, but rather the information you need to make your own sweaters based on tried and true traditional methods.

I really enjoyed this book a lot as it seemed to have a bit more depth and complexity than many cozies that I've read. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

  • New Pathways for Sock Knitters: Book One
    • Rated 5 stars

This is a fantastic book for those tiring of the traditional sock construction techniques. There are many twists on the standard sock construction and each new construction has several patterns you can use to explore it, including baby socks so you can get a feel for the new construction with minimal time and supplies. There are also master patterns allowing you to knit any of the constructions with any gauge and foot size. It is very inspirational with well written directions.
