The thing I have discovered about my reading habits is that I simply read to be entertained. I read to be taken away from all the mundane things in life. I pick up a book to escape the cooking and cleaning, the bills and home repairs, the job worries and health concerns.

I loved my first McDevitt book, Eternity Road, and hoped for a similar experience my second time around with Polaris. I have to say though, while it was a solid title, it just didn't live up to my expectations.

I found the first bit of the book to be rather engaging; the characters were interesting and the locations, whether they be on ship or planet, all believable. The intrigue and mystery built up nicely, with a sort of sci-fi "who dun it" feel.

Towards the middle though is where I ran into problems. By the time I was little beyond half way through the book I had already figured out the big 'mystery', which pretty much killed the climax for me. I guess you could say I knew the what and the how, the only thing that came as a surprise at the end was the 'why'.

Still though it was a quick read and not completely unenjoyable. It won't put me off trying other McDevitt titles
