Hi, I'm an English Teacher in San Diego, CA. I love to read and am looking forward to seeing what others recommend as I will be avidly reading all summer long! I also enjoy all sports (playing and watching), and spending time with my 2 year old pup, Hamlet.

Did you ever get around to reading Tortilla Curtain? I'm wondering what you thought.

Wow!! Solid shelf. I saw Kozol speak in Portland. I have yet to read his latest (Shame of the Nation), but my roommate bought it (so I hope to read it soon). You have a lot of great books on your shelf that I am sure to take a further look at.

    Hola Elizabeth,

    How goes it?

I am well. Heading back to NJ in a couple days. Getting ready for the DR trip.

Realized today that my copy of Potter 7 will probably be forwarded to SC while I'm in NJ. :(

Yes, I am a D'Amato. In Naples I met someone with my exact name. Molto strano!

Best of luck with the conference.

    Ciao, Michael

I agree with the others. The picture is great, of both you and Hamlet! My son lives in Vegas and his girlfriend's in San Diego. They fly the friendly skies almost every weekend. He's been trying to find a job there, their choice between the two cities, but is not having much luck. What a beautiful place to live!

Hammer is a golden retriever, I think. Life in Omaha is good! School is going to start soon though, and I'm not ready to go back!

I will look for that book. What is it about?

    Greetings Liz,

    How goes it?

I am doing well. Just relaxing, enjoying life.

I haven't read the books you mentioned, but let me know when you are finished if they are worth checking out.

I'm not doing much school-related work this summer except for a book club that a colleague has set up here for our students. It's really neat. Since students are required to do summer reading he decided to make it more social. He gathered a bunch of our kids from the Learn & Serve group and had them agree on two books to read this summer. They chose "Behind the Mountains" and "In the Time of the Butterflies." The first takes place in Haiti, the later in the DR. The books were chosen because we adopted a school in the DR last year and are going there this summer to do a lot of work and bring over the school supplies we collected.

It's our first time trying it, but has been very insightful so far.

Well, I am off to the casino boats in SC with my dad. It''s fun because he's usually the loudest one on the boat. Wish me luck.

    Morning Liz,

    How art thou?

How do you like "A Thousand Splendid Suns"? I am surprised that I didn't pick it up on its release date since I enjoyed "The Kite Runner" so much.

I have written two books so far. One's for teachers and the other I co-authored for teens into sports. The website for the books is theclassroombook.com

I am eagerly working on my third this summer. I am trying to keep the topic hush like I did with my other two. It adds to the excitement. Have you given writing a shot?

I just finished "In the Time of the Butterflies," which was nice, but not outstanding. I am debating if I should read "The Devil in the White City" or a Janet Evanovich book of my mom's.

I'm curious, what books do you need to read for school? Did you mean the school where you teach or are you taking classes?

    Ciao, Michael

Yikes...no, I can't write books. I've even tried. I love to write, but only in short, reactionary bursts. I can't think of stories (fiction) to save my life. I've always wanted to be Mike Royko or Anna Quindlen when I grew up, though... thank you (and your friend) for the compliment. I must across much better than how it sounds in my own head, that's for sure!

    Hola Liz,

If the typos continue, I will have to take you off my friend's list. (Kidding!)

As for my summer project, I am working on book #3. Writing is a cathartic experience for me, especially when I get to be passionate about it.

I am a little familiar with SCAD. I believe they have at least one student from each of the 50 states. Kind of a neat thing to claim.

If I may, what are you currently reading?

    Ciao, Michael

Hi, Back when I used to teach American Studies, I used Tortilla Curtain as a summer extra for kids who needed a boost to pass. Probably 8 - 10 kids read TC and they unanimously loved it. Perfect for the modern American Dream. There is a rape scene and I think maybe some questionable language, but it would be perfect since you are in California. It is a terrific book.

Your Hamlet looks very sweet. I have seriously concidered getting another pug and naming him Hamlet, but some people think their relationship might be too unstable. :)
Very good idea to read all summer. I am really trying.

    Hey Liz,

    How art thou?

I'm actually in the Myrtle Beach area now, relaxing and working on my latest project.

Charleston is very nice. Did you get to stroll Rainbow Row? About a two hour drive from Charleston is Savannah, GA - my ultimate favorite city in the US. If you find yourself in SC in the near future I highly recommend setting aside a couple days.

How was your year of teaching?

    Greetings,

NJ is fine. I am actually in SC right now visiting family before the DR trip.

The trip is going to be amazing. A close colleague of mine has organized a coalition of teachers to visit the DR and meet with migrant Haitian workers in the sugar cane fields, set it up so we could bring and play team-building activities (my specialty) with girls in an AIDS orphanage, and we'll wrap it up with a session with civil rights activist Sonia Pierre.

I just finished reading "In the Time of the Butterflies" which is about a legendary group of sisters from the DR. Terrific read, but someone spoiled the ending before I could finish.

    Take care, Michael

Hi! Our school can't "require" summer reading, but for our AP and honors classes we strongly encourage and "recommend" it. This summer I have asked them to read HTRLLP and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I just want them to read for fun, no assignments attached! We will deal with the books in a more academic way once the school year starts, but they don't have to bring any completed assignments with them.
