Editing is thankless work. I don't envy you that work... at all. But I do wish you well in the effort... and a receptive writer! ;)

My Soul to Keep was the first of Due's novels that I picked up, and remains the only one I've actually finished--the others just creep me out way too much. I don't remember the details at all, but I do remember the experience of reading it. I could not read it fast enough. I loved the way the story unfolded, layer by layer, drop by bloody drop.

If you're with the vampires, we'd better watch out! :D Speaking of which, I don't remember, did you read Fledgling with the OB group read? If not, when you return to her, you might want to pick it up--fantastic!

You know, it's been so long since I read Cholera--at least twenty years now. I don't have a clear memory of it. I was always fond of One Hundred Years of Solitude, which is definitely better in the original Spanish, but the translations aren't too bad. God bless translators! I just read a collection of poetry originally written in Polish, and loved every words of it. I cannot imagine how it could have been better in the original, but surely it must have been, right? Anyway, if you get around to Garcia Marquez, let me know what you think. In the meantime, have a happy Thanksgiving!

p.s. I like your new note of warning. ;)

I loved the characters in a Secret Life of Bees but a story of child abuse especially girl; makes me want to jump in the book and beat the abuser up. It takes away all my objectivity and chance to enjoy the story and that's my story. I do love the strong beautiful women; their understanding and love of each other. Their sweet solution to a world not of their making.

The Caged Bird Sings may have been my first African American novel and then I found all the rest of Ms. Angelou's work and devoured/vampired them. I'm so happy that Maya 'made' it. Her story of living in Africa was/is my favorite and that is she so brave a wonderful womanly role model. If I could pick a Mom, she's my choice. No choices there though and I'm way too old to choose. As I say tho my grandkids, it's just pretend and let's enjoy.

Well, I'd like to like you... I will always demand equal rights for all, always. What did you think of Mr. King's book 'On Writing?' I wake myself up when the sea of books on my bed shifts, one falls to the floor. Do I add another or return the fallen to my bed?
A movie a week whether i need it or not & yet there is always the need; matinees are usually quiet and a well played tale is as wonderful as a well told book.

I've heard American Gangster was good, but you couldn't pay me to see it in the theater. I don't like going to the movies in general, because I cannot stand the thought that people might be talking, and then I imagine the crowd at a film like that... shivers up my spine. ;) Glad you enjoyed it, though!

You'll have to tell me how the movie is. I don't plan to see it. Hollywood just doesn't seem to know what to do with South American magical realists. After they butchered Isabel Allende's House of Spirits, I am afraid, very very afraid to see what they will do with el maestro.

You're back as your avatar. So sorry to hear about your loss. As to your question over in OB Talk: I'm not in Chicago, but it's one of the few cities in the country that I imagine I could live and teach in.

That you've curled up in bed with so many books says you have a vivid interior life. What a way to live! You know, I think you might like Jackson--she write about the horror of the everyday. I'm sure you've read or at least encountered her short story "The Lottery." You can read it here: http://www.americanliterature.com/SS/SS16.HTML

God never put more on you than you can bear and Ruth is holding God to His Word. Ruth has lived her entire life in the shadow of her parents, Bishop and Queen Esther, as the poster child of Preachers kids. After over 30 years of marriage, she realizes that her husband was stepping out on her. Ruth woke up from the haze that had become her life to realize that life threw her a drastic curve ball.

Keep Misery Company is an exceptional read. The storyline is full of twists and turns while dealing with everyday issues – homosexuality/AIDS, forgiveness, teen pregnancy, adultery, homelessness, and drama in the church. The character development is on point as the reader can easily relate with the realistic characters. Keeping Misery Company was a combination of The Color Purple and Diary of a Mad Black Women – running the emotional gamut while illustrating God's ultimate sacrifice. Definitely one of the BEST and ORGINAL CHRISTIAN FICTION books this year!
