  • Night
    • Rated 5 stars

It would be easy to say everyone will feel compelled to this book 5 stars because of the subject matter but Night receives top marks from because of it's straight forward writing style and clear narrative. Night was a quick but by no means easy read. The subject was not new but during the first half when people are been ripped from their homes and families I could feel tears prickling in my ears. When they arrive at the camps horror soon dries the tears but no matter how many I read or films I see on this subject I am still left incredulous that people could do such things. The book is quite short and clearly written. And you can feel Elie Wiesel's pain reaching out to you across the text - A must read.

I read this book when I was a teenager and it was a hot best seller.
I found it a slow, boring read and was thoroughly irritated by the rather pompous self-centred main character.
I tend not to be very appreciative of stories that romanticise men who are obsessed with what they can't have.

Started well then fizzled into nothing. For the last 150 pages it seemed about to end but just dragged on. And then the ending was pretty lame.

I also found it irritatingly repetitive concerning the characters feelings, as if the author was unable show any development as the charaters matured/went through life. That same emotion was stated again and again, engendering in me the desire to scream 'Get over it!' even when the emotions were valid.

    Disappointing.

Our teacher read this to us in primary school and I loved it so much I took it straight out of the library and reread it.

An interesting story that gives insight into the cultural of both the colonials and the Burmese people of the time.
    Bit depressing.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to particularly as many reviews criticised the book for being over descriptive, a trait I normally find to be both pretentious and tedious in the extreme.
However this book's measured pace, slow but not plodding, left plenty of room for the for a detailed but restrained depiction of the weather and the countryside.

The element of mystery surrounding the court case held the narrative together as the author delved into the interlocking histories of the various protagonists.

On the minus side, I probably liked the Japanese woman a lot, than I was supposed to. I not sure whether this was just because I felt she was capricious or due to a culture clash with an accurately portrayed Japanese character.

A quick easy read a pleasant way to pass the time but a bit too light and chicklit for me

I enjoyed this book and found it even easier to read than The Virgin Blue. There is a pleasant flow to the writing both in the language style and the plotting.
The ending was relatively happy which was pleasant. However having read two Chevalier books in a couple of months I have found them to be quite disturbing. Both books portray a world where women, especially the main characters, have no security or stability. It is not a question of the hard work or even the cruelty that these women face rather the petty backbiting, the feeling that their every breath is judged and there is no one in whom they can confide and on whom they can rely.
