Im into zen, philosophy, theory, logic, rhetoric or a good story. If I'm not loitering at a book store or library, I'm probably riding my bike or walking around. I have an (obvious) soft spot for fantasy, sci-fi, cyberpunk, and a little to much manga. I work in computers. I'm working my way through all the 'basics' like Plato and Hemingway.

    *randomly says hi*

just out of curiosity, why do you say that Wizards First Rule is cheesy? I read a LOT of Fantasy books. I live for fantasy. I got to say this is one of the most close to realistic I have read.

anyway I was just randomly reading reviews with the lack of anything better to do on the net.

anyway...just going to take a peek at the books thats on your shelf...

    What are you studying?

Aside from my Top Ten, I do a favorite of the year. Jane Eyre was my 07 favorite - I highly recommend it. Jane is a kickass female character. She endures so much and still manages to remain true to herself.

I've never read The Hemingway Hoax, but I've heard good things about it. Should I?

thanks for the note of peace! i do feel you were behaving badly, but then, i might say the same for myself. you are always welcome to debate any point on BTS as long as we stay on the civil side of things,
anyway, carry on, and again, thanks for the note.

hey erthian! long time no see...

wow, few people must be reading this book at the moment^^. sputnik sweetheart was my first murakami book to read, and it blew me away at the time. i've reread it since then, but it's been a while...

i get your 'i'm not sure', i think i felt the same way. i couldn't decide at times if it was really deep or slightly boring. i wouldn't say it's my all-time favourite exactly, but i do think he brings a certain balance to this book --between the simple and the surreal-- that is quite different from some of his other works. to me this one is definitely more low-key, while still retaining the murakami weirdness i love.

as for the themes, i think it was the bitter sweetness of loving while not being loved, and how that relates to who you are as a person that interested me the most...

if i remember correctly^^. how about you?
    thanks for dropping by!

I thought of something else with about Lullaby. Marx was mentioned early in the book, and I think that the four main characters are supposed to be the couple main groups that make up a society. That is to say, the non-poor work to reinforce the structure of the society that they already live in. And when the poor (or whoever) takes a controlling share in a society, they too work to reinforce the word as they see it. Even if it is still slightly different.

I also read I'm Not Scared. Erin read it for her Good Books class and then wanted me to read it. That was good. The author, Niccolo Ammaniti, understands the phrase 'meaing, sense, and clarity.' Chuck does not. Doesn't make it interesting, though.

Thought Lullaby was good. Chuck has really good concrete details, but no sensory details. It good that the abstract ideas that he has are good, because the actual foundation of his writing isn't very strong.
