    I Wear the Colour Green

    by Cedric L. Jones

A Most Excellent Book In Green!

This is an excellent book of poems by Cedric L. Jones. I truly like the way he articulated the language of poetry in this text. When I first picked up the book and looked at the cover, I thought it would be about the Green man of the forest; however, I have found it deeper that the Green man of the Forest. I also thought it would be about the army as a unit wearing green, where everyone is all about an army of one. However, it is much further.

The poem, “The Lazy Days of Summer,” is one to drift away with especially with eyes closed. It will take you on a journey of butterfly and carpet rides. This is very memory refreshing. Additionally, “In The Mist,” is equally refreshing. These leave one with adventure in the heart of taking that step outside the comfort zone and into another dimension where life has a different perspective.

Jones appeared to be opening his heart regarding love in this wonderful book. In the poem, “And I’m Alone,” we find verses as such. “What is Love?” enhanced the tone with a series of rhetorical questions. “I Still Keep Holding On’ is emblematical of the fact that he will not give up on love, and “Dear Daddy” further break the images down for all to understand. One will find the poem entitled, “Green,” on page 31, which show green to be an integral part of the whole.

The book is divided into two parts. The first part is “From the Mind.” It is right on point with the theme. The 2nd part is entitled “Some Boys Do,” which has a different message from the former.

There are some wonderful list styled poems in the latter section, and/or poem with the list techniques incorporated; such as, “Fingerprints” and “Sigh.” The rhetorical question techniques raise many life challenging questions in the section, and the emphasis on the dash is also used to highlight answers and thoughts. Finally, the poems are centered to the left margin, which makes it easier for the eye to follow and read.

This is a most wonderful book to read. It is highly recommended.

From Out of the Pit I Cried

From Out of the Pit—Awesome Poetic Articulation

This is the second book by Mary Duhart in a continuation of a series regarding her belief in God and her expressions of His grace as a blessing in her life. The title, “From Out of the Pit,” resonates throughout the book. It sets the theme for the poems penned in the book. The theme is also consistent from the first poem to the last. The consistency of the theme keeps the reader in focus with the message and her prevailing thoughts in each poem.

The book has a variety of poetic styles and forms created by a variety of poets. The glossary actually reflects a total of thirty-five poems with corresponding definitions. The definitions give an example one will find easy to remember and write from memory. They are very instructive, easily read, and not hard to understand. I have tried writing some of the poems based on the definitions and did not experience any problems.

Each poem in the book has the specific name of that form listed in parentheses under the title of the poem. This is very instructive because most poetry books do not have the name of the form listed below the title. This was always a mystery to many readers because they could not tell the form or style of the poem unless they possess prior knowledge of the poetic form or style. Mary Duhart has removed the mystery by listing the poetry form or style below each poem and has also listed the definition of the form in the glossary. This I have found to be very informative and instructive.

The book also has a variety of pictures which accompany each poem. Additionally, a series of motifs are also outlined in the book, which makes the reading more interesting. The motifs are appealing to the eyes and enhance the essence of each poem. Normally, one does not find pictures in a book of poems which is another mystery; however, this book removes the mystery with a great selection of pictures and motifs to enhance the understanding of the poem by telling a thousand words.

One will find the following poetic forms or styles in this book: Acrostic, Anaphora, Cameo, Candlelight, Daveda’s Cascade, English Pensee, Etheree, Daveda’s Charm, Christiana’s View, Haiku, Joseph’s Star, Hourglass, Lucky Leaf, Senryu, Shandorma, Tree of life, Whitney and others just to name a few.
This is an excellent book written with a variety of poetry styles and forms. Mary Duhart has really focused on her message From Out of the Pit to the reader. She has truly poured her heart out in this newly released book. One must read it to appreciate it. The theme is very persuasive.
