Everything pales in comparison to a really good story. I've been fortunate to have worked in the book business for over 20 years, both in retail (independent and corporate) and in a public library. It's been a booklover's dream! But currently I'm not in the bookworld (professionally speaking) and I kinda miss it. I'll read just about anything... more »

Interesting to see Ender's Game on your shelf. You don't have much SciFi. This is a great book that proves that science fiction can be literature.

    RE: Eats, Shoots and Leaves
Very amusing book on grammar and language use. Maybe we should get her to do a piece for the preciseedit.wordpress.com blog. On the other hand--while Truss espouses the serial comma (the Oxford comma, for friends on the other side of the Atlantic), she often forgets it herself! Shame on her editor. Still, I recommend it to our writing course students, and I'm glad to see it on your bookshelf.

Hi! I wanted to let you know I'm just about to finish The Golden Compass. I found it started off a little slow, but quickly picked up. I'm really enjoying it, and will likely read the other two books in the trilogy soon after finishing it. Do you know if the movie is based on all three books, or just the first one?

There are so many similarities in our reading that I had to say Hi. Looking forward to reading some of the books on your shelf I havent gotten to yet.

Hi. I haven't started The Golden Compass yet, but it is high on my pile of to be read books. I'd like to read it sometime this summer (I have a lot of books I'd like to read this summer though). I'll let you know what I think when I do read it. I will read it before I see the movie :-)

Hi! No joy yet, but I haven't given up hope!
I'm still scanning shelves frantically. I'll let you know when (not if!) I find it.
    Thanks for thinking about it.

Hi! Reluctant to admit, but just visiting again for the first time in quite a while. You left a note about The Time Traveler's Wife... but I'm having trouble finding it! Eager to hear what you have to say....

Hi again. Glad to hear your car is fixed and all is well. Are you still reading Katherine? Are you enjoying it? I read your post referring to Pullman's His Dark Materiels trilogy in the "WTF?" group. I've had this series sitting unread on my shelf for ages. I've been meaning to read it, but just never seem to get to it. I saw the trailer for The Golden Compass recently too - it looks fantastic. I'll definitely be reading the book before the movie comes out.

It is so great that you have The Mysteries of Harris Burdick on your shelf. I use that with my students as story starters. They are wonderful...the illustrations are amazing!!

I hope you enjoy Katherine. It is one of my all-time favourite books! It got me started on Anya Seton's work. I've also read Green Darkness (which I enjoyed) and Avalon (which I found boring), and have many of her other works sitting on my to be read pile.

If you enjoy historical fiction I recommend giving Sharon Kay Penman a try. I think she's one of the best writers of historical fiction out there today. Her England-Wales trilogy, which starts with Here Be Dragons, is excellent!

He loves those books. You never know about these civil war reenactors. Was his name Steve? If it is, I think we have the same guy!

HI! I saw your response re: Philippa Gregory in the WTF group and thought I'd write to let you know I don't think you need to read her books in historical order. Although I've seen the books referred to as the "tudor court" novels, they aren't a series, each book is a stand-alone. I started with The Other Boleyn Girl. Have you finished The Constant Princess?

You are correct. The Gray Mouser was named for the book/scifi series! No one has ever known that!

Re: Jenna Starborn. That's the trouble with posting "I hated this book," no matter what the book is: somebody else at Shelfari is sure to have liked it! I don't know why that one, out of all Shinn's work, didn't grab me; maybe it was because I love Jane Eyre so much that my expectations were too high? Could be.
