You sure got into that box of books fast! I don't blame you. To-night I am going to start reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. Read in two days Love Marriage- a new book out. I really enjoyed it as it was written in a different form.

Hello I have agreed to joining the group but who knows if I will have a chance to read any of the books. Do you have one you think I might enjoy to start with. PS I have changed my screen name to Elizabeth - my actual middle name since I thought I should not have my real name there. C

I don't know who any of the young actors are these days! I don't see enough movies, and even when I do I can't remember the actors' names! I guess Jamie is supposed to be 23 in the first book and Claire maybe 28. The only person who keeps popping to my mind for Claire is probably too old now. Did you ever see First Knight with Sean Connery (King Arthur), Richard Gere (Sir Lancelot), and Julia Ormond? Julia Ormond is the strong-willed Guinevere, and she has long, dark, curly hair--sounds like Claire to me! But I think that movie is probably 15 years old, and she was the right age at the time. I guess they will have to pick some unknowns! The other one who had that look was Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (I think that's her name) as Maid Marian in Robin Hood (with Kevin Costner, also an old movie now). She's a tad more exotic looking though, not quite as close a match as Ormond.

That's right, I had forgotten about the Thomas character. I really liked The Last Time They Met. I can't believe they made Midwives into a movie--how does it happen that these things come out and I don't hear about them?! Did you see it? Was it any good? My favorite movie from a book was Sophie's Choice, which amazes me because the book is huge--but they didn't seem to leave out anything. The movie is exactly the way I imagined the book in my head. One that I hated was The Firm--they completely changed the ending, and I can't figure out why! Grisham is a good storyteller and his books read as though they're meant to be movies! I wonder if anyone will ever tackle the Outlander books. As far as Bohjalian, I have loved all his books so pick up whichever one interests you. I read Midwives once when I was spending a week in the Northeast Kingdom part of Vermont, which is where it's set.

Here's another note for you (see I wrote you one a few minutes ago!). I see you have read all the Outlanders, too! Do you read Chris Bohjalian? They are satisfying sort of in the same way that Shreve's books are--readable fiction with a big twist.

Sorry I took so long to respond to your note! I need to come on here more often. I think what you mean in Shreve's books is the theme of the house. Four of her books took place in the same house in different eras--Fortune's Rocks, Sea Glass, The Pilot's Wife, and Body Surfing (that last one I haven't read--I don't think it's in paperback yet!). Did you read Fortune's Rocks and Sea Glass? Fortune's Rocks reminds me of a big, fat, satisfying 19th century novel. The only movie I saw was The Weight of Water, which I liked except that they totally changed the ending. I hate it when they do that to books! I was in the video store last week and saw that Resistance was a movie, but I didn't rent it. Did you read it?

Hi--just got your note. I think I have read just about all of Anita Shreve's books, and I'd recommend any of them (easy but rewarding reads for busy moms). I just picked a few to put on my shelf. You can put whatever you want on your shelf. I just picked books that were particularly memorable that I've read in the past few years. I think with Shreve I included some that people might be less likely to know, like Resistance. Which ones have you read? --Matrescano
