I am currently the librarian at a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. I read a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction. I'm unofficially participating in the Zombies reading challenge for this year, so expect to see a bunch of zombie books on my shelf.

Does it gain plausibility? Not that two moons hanging in the sky is plausible. I'm getting close to page 600, and I'm starting to feel Murakami might have gone off the deep end here. But the reviews suggest otherwise.

Have you read anything by Philip Roth? I don't see him on your shelf...

Nicole and I are going to read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I decided I had to after reading your review.

Ah, I see. I didn't realize it had been that long since it had been published.

I don't see where you've read Black Swan Green. Are you sure you've read it? If not, I recommend reading it! NOTHING like Jacob de Zoet.

I should be ready to start it tomorrow. Have you read Cloud Atlas? Andy is reading it right now. I'll start a discussion for Thousand Autumns in the English Majors soon...

Haha, I am about to start reading Black Hole! So far this year I am coming across some really good books...I picked up _The Funny Little Woman_, which I've long noticed as one of your favorites--SO GOOD! I read it to Jake, and he seemed to like it a lot. I have a feeling it may become one of my favorites as well...

OK, sounds good! I could probably start it sooner, if you want. Just let me know!

Also--wish I had not seen your review of _Super Sad True Love Story_ because I own a copy and will now probably never read it!

I noticed you have _The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet_ on your "plan to read" list, as do I since receiving it as a Christmas gift. Want to line up a reading with me, maybe in a month or so?

You missed very little with Ulysses. I gave it 3 stars, but it really deserves 2.5, in my view. If Joyce had not employed such unique literary devices, I would have been almost fully unable to appreciate it at all. And apparently Dubliners is a kind of prelude to it, so I would suggest reading it first, if you haven't already. (I remember you saying you'd discovered a nice copy in a little bookstore somewhere?)

I really enjoyed Anna Karenina, but I recall feeling similarly, especially about Levin and his farm work. It's the same with the war sections in War & Peace--the boring parts are a tad (OK, more than a tad) overdone.

I haven't been reading much, but I don't think it's because I haven't got the time. It's because Ulysses takes such a great effort to read. I often read 10 pages and then have to put the book down so I don't lose focus or fall asleep. And I refuse to start another book until it's finished, so I'm kind of screwed. I think I'm now finally 3/4 through it, though, so I hope to finish it soon.

What about you? Read any great books lately?

is the wild things out yet in the US - I've ordered it from SF, but things can take a long time to get to our edge of the world.

Want to join in on a discussion of Ulysses in the Fiction effect group? We're just now beginning. I meant to let you know sooner, but Shelfari and reading in general have taken the back burner for me lately. You still have plenty of time to join in--I'm moving VERY slowly.

Fine by me. I just finished Chapter 5, and I don't have the time or energy to have a lengthy discussion about the book right now.
