I am currently the librarian at a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC. I have a pretty long commute so all of my reading gets done on the bus or the metro. I'm starting a master's program in political science so my bookshelf will soon be full of political theory texts.

You missed very little with Ulysses. I gave it 3 stars, but it really deserves 2.5, in my view. If Joyce had not employed such unique literary devices, I would have been almost fully unable to appreciate it at all. And apparently Dubliners is a kind of prelude to it, so I would suggest reading it first, if you haven't already. (I remember you saying you'd discovered a nice copy in a little bookstore somewhere?)

I really enjoyed Anna Karenina, but I recall feeling similarly, especially about Levin and his farm work. It's the same with the war sections in War & Peace--the boring parts are a tad (OK, more than a tad) overdone.

I haven't been reading much, but I don't think it's because I haven't got the time. It's because Ulysses takes such a great effort to read. I often read 10 pages and then have to put the book down so I don't lose focus or fall asleep. And I refuse to start another book until it's finished, so I'm kind of screwed. I think I'm now finally 3/4 through it, though, so I hope to finish it soon.

What about you? Read any great books lately?

is the wild things out yet in the US - I've ordered it from SF, but things can take a long time to get to our edge of the world.

Want to join in on a discussion of Ulysses in the Fiction effect group? We're just now beginning. I meant to let you know sooner, but Shelfari and reading in general have taken the back burner for me lately. You still have plenty of time to join in--I'm moving VERY slowly.

OK. I'll start the discussion, and you can just add to it when you can. : )

Have you organized your thoughts yet? I'm waiting for you to start the discussion because I don't know how to begin.

Fine by me. I just finished Chapter 5, and I don't have the time or energy to have a lengthy discussion about the book right now.

Where are you at in Song of Solomon? Would you rather discuss it midway through or just once at the very end?

I went ahead and started the discussion for it, just in case anyone else wants to join in, though no one ever does. Feel free to discuss however many chapters you want when you like. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance, and I'll probably need prompting from you to get me going.

I also began Don Quixote (1,000 pages!) which I'm a little psyched out about but feel I need to tackle it because I've owned a copy for over two years now.

Have you read any Toni Morrison? I read The Bluest Eye a long time ago but read Beloved a few months back and really enjoyed it. I just started Song of Solomon and wondered if you'd like to join me? Short notice, I know!

I just added a bunch of the books you rated highly on your shelf to my Wishlist. I can't believe how many books you've read since the last time I perused it! And most all the books I've read are on there! I just finished To Kill a Mockingbird, which I've somehow never read. It was amazing. (Luckily I haven't seen the movie either, so it was a complete surprise.)

I think we should go ahead and discuss it in parts. I didn't even realize there were parts, but surely I'm almost finished with Part I. I'll go ahead and open a discussion for it in English Majors/Minors, and whichever of us finishes Part I first can go ahead and write down what they think about it.

Have you begun The Sea yet? I'm about halfway through it. Did I start too soon for you? I started it last weekend, when you told me you thought you'd be ready, but I probably should have checked with you again first.

I'm also reading For Whom the Bell Tolls (have you read it?), which I'm finding addictive, but it's conflicting with The Sea and another book I just started reading for a discussion group. Did I mention I'm still trudging through Stuff of Thought? I'm almost halfway through it. I don't know why I don't just give up. The author makes an interesting point every 50 pages or so.

I started it a few days ago, but barely. I've been taking my time with it. It's not a book you can read extremely quickly.
