This is probably the best read in my list of fiction in the last several years. The stories of the characters are complex and windy, but Shafak intertwines them skillfully to weave the fabric of a sophisticated plot. The main themes of the book oscillate between national and transnational identity, past and present, memory and remembering. Fascinating work!

I have to agree with most of the readers here and say that the movie definitely outshined the book, if we can talk about "shining" at all. The plot was virtually nonexistent in the book, while the screenwriter stitched the stories of the characters in the book in a way to create a plot-line. I try to think of Fowler's intention and can see a great potential in the idea: all these people's personal stories echo or communicate with the plots and themes in Austen's books. However, how do you have a plot that combines all of the above? This is pretty complicated, and perhaps we should not judge Fowler so much. After all, the movie was fine or rather watchable.
