I am at the University of Arizona working on my PhD in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English. My academic interests primarily revolve around histories and theories of rhetoric, visual rhetoric, new media, and literacy studies, though I've always loved literature. However, I never have the time to read for fun anymore. It kinda sucks.

I should think it would have some interest for you, rhetorically. It's composed in a number of arcane styles of speech and writing, sort of a tour of language as a (marvelously) educated person of 1904 would give. It's also a famous tour of Dublin.

I've just started in on Ulysses for the third or ninth time. I wondered if you've ever tried to tackle Finnegans Wake, as a student of the English language. Ulysses is hard enough for me.

Hello, Elise. I see that you are working on a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition at my alma mater. Did my undergrade in English at UofA. Teach AP Language and Composition and I am kinda looking for a MA - or (gasp) PhD in Rhetoric - how is UofA's program? (I miss Tucson!)

"Bestseller" is a meaningless term, except in terms of finances. For example, books from the current bestseller list: The Appeal by John Grisham, 7th Heaven by James Patterson, Strangers in Death by J.D. Robb, and Honor Thyself by Danielle Steele. I believe this proves my point that bestselling does not, nor will it ever, equal quality reading.

I think about how warm it must be in Arizona and how much I'd like to sit with all the retirees and watch spring training. Maybe open a book about rhetoric and just lay it across my lap while I count pitches.

If you show up like that to your PhD defense you might just get appointed head of the English department.

I really enjoyed looking through your shelf. We had quite a number of books in common, but I found many more on your shelf that looked interesting.

Nice shelf. Thought I'd mention that if you loved The Road you may want to try Russell Hoban's amazing (and now classic) post-apocalyptic novel Riddley Walker. Very different than The Road but as powerful and well-written.
