Reading should be pleasurable, I think, so unless the "foreplay" is worth my time I'm not going to be feigning enjoyment anytime soon. I just finished reading Sex Changes: Transgender Politics, whose title is rather self-explanatory. I highly recommend it to...more »

You gave Conquistador one star? I'm curious why. Stirling's no Tolstoy, that's for sure, but the novel I thought was fun.

I don't think I'll be able to come Friday because this is basically the last weekend for us to stage the house so I'm going to get Cinderella all weekend. I'm going to work like a demon so hopefully I can come on Saturday!

I'm so glad to hear from you! I was planning to call/e-mail you sometime this week. This weekend I'm going out of town, but the weekend after I should journey over the berkeley and see you!

I read...22 books over winter break, but 10 of them were graphic novels

It's pretty chilly right now. Summer was suddenly over on Tuesday. It can get a bit below ) (Celsius...not sure what that is in Fahrenheit) in Dec. and Jan but usually ranges from 10-26 degrees. It's a very damp place though and I'm often cold.

It's from Bioshock, an amazing video game thats a critique of Ayn Rand! Yes!

I get back on Friday :) Cafe Gratitude it is! Mmm.

I think I am going to go vegan (at least as much as possible, maybe not if I go out to eat and there's nothing to eat) so I'll need yours and Gregg's help to make sure I don't get ill like I did last time :D I was also thinking about going raw on Wednesdays, but I'm taking it one step at a time, hah.

I wish I remembered my dreams. I sleep like the dead. I took a nap today and evidently Craig tried to wake me up twice and even set the alarm and I didn't even stir. :(

    Hi,
Vancouver's mostly an outdoorsy kind of place. Lots of good hiking and walking trails, parks, sailing etc. Is there a way to send private notes on this? Let me know and I'll tell you more.

In BC, homeschooling is subsidized by the govt, but I know what you mean. and it's certainly not the answer for everyone. It wouldn't have worked for me...I needed more mentoring, not less. (I found the Teenage Liberation Handbook kind of annoying, to be honest.)
    Take care!

    Hi again,
Thanks for asking about my work. Basically I work with home/de/un-schooling families to help them plan a learning program based on what the students are interested in. Then I suggest resources and help the parents learn to observe the learning that's going on. Then we refine the program as we go along.

The program is based on the work of Brent Cameron
and the idea we should honour of the ability of every child to learn naturally from their enthusiasm to understand and their curiosity about how the world works. He's got a book called "SelfDesign" that explains his philosophy.

As for how well it works, it really depends on the parents and how willing they are to have real conversations with me. Some of them create an amazing environment for their kids while others struggle.

What parts of your education system would you like to reform? I taught (briefly) in Brooklyn and found it quite interesting to see the differences between the system there and here.

Hope things go well with the start of the new year!
