Mende lives a peaceful happy life until her Nuba village is raided and she is forced into slavery by Arabic raiders. She is brought to the capital of Sudan where she becomes the slave a wealthy Arabic family. Her cruel owner beats her regularly and Mende lives in constant fear. It's shocking to think that slavery still exists in our world today and young victims like Mende still suffer such horrific fates. Mende's first person account is difficult to read at times, but is an important story that needs to be heard.

This was my favorite of the series, a continuation of Elizabeth's plight as she recovers from a gunshot wound to the head and defends herself against charges of murder.

A local librarian had recommended this, so I pick it from the recommendation shelf. I was surprised to learn that a group of Hassidic Jews had a community in Iowa, where they operated a kosher slaughter house. The author analyzes the Lubavitches relationship to the locals of Postville and follows the attempt to annex the slaughter house land in order to have more control over the Jewish business. Jewsish himself, he finds the Lubavitches domineering and rigid, yet admires their strong faith.

Dean Karnaze's accomplishments as a runner are amazing. The descriptions of his journeys through the brutal races he participates in are funny and inspiring. It's hard to believe a person can actually run these distances in such extreme conditions.

This controversial memoir of a Chinese mother raising her two daughters with severe restrictions and extremely high expectations is brutally and amusingly honest, and would make anyone examine their own parenting. Chua argues that American parents unwittingly send the message that their children are weak and incapable by never challenging them or holding them to high standards. Her methods, even she acknowledges, sometimes go to far, but the successes she and her daughters have achieved point to some validation of her parenting.

  • The Fourth Turning

This was a very difficult but intriguing book about cycles in US history and how social and historical events are influenced by the different generations of people that experience them and vice versa. The "fourth turning" is the next big crisis period to hit the US, and since the book was written in the 1990's, we should be experiencing it about now!

Franzen explores the modern family with all its flaws in this saga about raising kids and finding purpose in midwest America. Patty and Walter seem like the model yuppie couple living the dream in St. Paul until their spoiled son goes astray and the family unravels. A decades long love triangle threatens to destroy the couple's marriage, and Walter's obsession with environmentalism leads him down a morally ambiguous path. The turmoil this family confronts forces each character to examine his or her motivation and past history in a way that is brutally honest.

My son got me this book for Mother's Day. Marshall Ulrich is an amazing person who runs unbelievable distances. This book recounts his run across America, from San Francisco to New York. Although the trip doesn't go as planned, Ulrich's determination is undaunted. Along the way he analyzes where his unsatiable urge to run originated. Anyone at all interested in running would enjoy this book.
