“I've read this one before, but sometimes I get discouraged by the slop that gets published nowadays: it was great to re-read a master.”

“It was slow to get going and ended just as it was starting to get interesting. It hasn't been interesting long enough to make me want to read more, unfortunately. It also seems to be lacking in more subtle sub-plots.”

“I wish this guy could keep writing more books. I figure if I was ever to write a book, and if I had the necessary talent, it would look just like this one. :)”

“It's so refreshing to finally find another page turner! I read so much that it gets hard for books to stand out much anymore. Maitland is a superb storyteller, so that even when it *seems* like nothing much is happening, I still didn't want to go to sleep. Excellent corner of history for this...”

“It really picks up in the last third of the book. The plot is so good you just kind of forget the writing is sub-standard. I'll read the next one when it comes out.”

“My first Nancy Drew story. At first I was a bit overwhelmed by the number of characters introduced in the first few pages, but it quickly settled down. Good twists; I actually couldn't guess who'd done it, which is refreshing. The old-fashioned social mores were entertaining in their own right.”

“Well, I'm glad I only paid a dollar for it. It's very "short story," and not in a thought-provoking, meaningful way. **However**, I really enjoyed the Afterword where Hamilton tells the source of her inspiration. The comic at the end was cute too.”

“Love-hate relationship with this book. Very engaging: I actually yelled out loud at the main character. The author has a beautiful and engaging writing style; I just didn't like the main character's flaws.”
