I guess that would be a male's romance novel and what I was expecting. It's an excellent review for a book I'll never read.

Well I did pick up a copy of The Count. Do you think you could have selected one with more pages? LOL

I work with a special form of taxes and help develop new processes, practices, etc for my group. I can easily agree with you on the Devil in the White City: it is Historical Fiction. The publisher, I am sure, knew that a certain segment of the population has a the hots for nonfiction ("I only read things that are real"--ugh), so they slapped that label on it. With Netherland: do you mean the recent book by Joseph O'Neil? I just checked Amazon and it looks interesting (an easy move the wishlist).

I totally agree with you on Blood Meridian: dark and vicious characters but a compelling read nonetheless. I feel so illogically happy to read your comment agreeing with me on Middlesex, too. Little things in the morning go a long way I guess.

I think I'm going to have trouble keeping up with your reading selections since I can only tackle ones that are immediately available in our library. Will give it a game try however.

Love it so far, not even enough to comment on intelligently. His descriptions of Hans' going through the motions after Sept. 11 in NYC--wow! Going back to his Tribeca apartment and not knowing what to expect after being away for so long. The feeling of tiredness he describes at trying to do simple things--so much strikes a chord. Fantastic. Not much of an answer, need to talk about it when I've read some more.

Don't quite see you as Snidely Whiplash by a long shot. Glad to hear you liked "Netherland." I even bought it after Jane recommended it so highly. Either The Count or Quixote sound like great choices to me.

Loved Madame Bovary--and thanks again. I'm with you on the fiction ride, nonfiction when I can. Another classic sounds good to me, or maybe a modern classic. How about what others think?

Hi, Matt--I'm nearly finished Madame Bovary. Thanks much for choosing this book--it's been wonderful to read. Have you thought what's next for the group?

I think you guys are out of town this weekend- so this recommendation may come a little too late to be useful during your relaxation time but I'm reading the most incredible book called 'The Story of Edgar Sawtelle' by David Wroblewski. Very convincing, very original, a real kick in the pants, just your style, I think. also, my mac account is down (long story) so my email is the same except at riseup.net rather then mac.com. I sent you one earlier this week at work but may not have gotten through the spam filters. Hope you guys had a great weekend. It's hot as hell here and people are stumbling around in a daze- us Washingtonians are constitutionally unsound during a heat wave, lots of complaining, heat stroke etc. I'm installing a fainting couch in my parlor as we speak. Hope you're well. talk to you soon,
    A.J.

Thought of you when I finished The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. Excellent book about the convalescence of a burn victim in the care of a supposed psychiatric patient. The book's getting a lot of buzz and is truly amazing, stories within stories and beautifully paced. A debut novel but to me, a masterpeice. Please consider it and let me know what you think.

I finished "Out", what did you think? I am going to read her new one, "Killer Children"....."Out" snared the reader in a net of curiosity.....did you find any characters sympathetic? Speaking of curiousity, I really do wonder what you thought.....your comments often make me rethink what I have read... talk to you later, think I will join you guys and read Madame Bovary again.....did you ever read the Mario Vargas Lhosa book about Flaubert? Can't remember the title, but might be a good tie-in since the group just read "the Bad Girl." Best, Jane

Hey Matt, I took your advice and tried reading Middlesex again. I am so very glad that I did. I don't think that I have ever met a character like Cal/Calliope. I loved Eugenides style and his attention to detail- I couldn't believe how much it read like a true story. Loved, loved, loved it. Thanks.
