  • The Last Empress

Excellent historical fiction about the last Empress of China, Orchid, who ruled during the Boxer rebellion. The book portrays Orchid very sympathetically, but how historically accurate it actually is, is anyone's guess.

Detective Archie Sheridan returns from medical leave to catch a serial killer. Unfortunately, to nab his prey, he needs to seek assistance from another serial killer, convict Gretchen Lowell, who nearly killed Archie before being brought to justice. Chelsea Cain has written a less subtle, more graphic thriller that is every bit as chilling as Silence Of The Lambs.

    Warrior Angel

    by Margaret Weis, Lizz Weis
    • Rated 2 stars

The plot sounded really good, but the writing was so trite. Word to the Weis': Lizz, don't give up your day job editing books QUITE yet; Margaret, stick to SF/Fantasy. Your Deathgate series and Dragonlance books are just amazing; it was disappointing to read this in comparison.

Awesome, terrific fantasy from Lynn Flewelling! I can't believe we have to wait a whole YEAR for the sequel, The White Road. Those who have read and enjoyed Flewelling's Tamir Triad and previous three Nightrunner books will not want to miss this one!

Alec i Amasa and Seregil i Korit have returned to Skala after completing their diplomatic errand to Aurenen. However, life is not the same. Most of their old friends are dead, or getting old, and the Watchers have fallen out of favor with royalty. When Queen Phoria reluctantly asks Alec and Seregil to do her favor, they comply, only to find themselves and their escort attacked along the way. Why? A necromancer finds Alec to be extraordinarily interesting, and old deeds from Seregil's past have come back to haunt him. Can they escape their separate imprisonments together and escape?

  • The Host

Very nice sci fi effort by Stephenie Meyer; I enjoyed it even more than her Twilight saga. The plot is sort of Pod People-ish, but with a fresh young twist to it. One caveat: have you seen Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan? There are a couple of scenes in that film that were brought VIVIDLY back to mind at least twice during this read (If you've seen the film AND read the book, you'll know what I'm referring to, LOL.) That said, kudos to Ms. Meyer, and I'm looking forward to reading more of this sort of material by her.

This book is almost prescient, with the current Democratic Presidential candidates (CLinton and Obama), almost as much so as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novel was of 911. Well and skillfully written by Archer, you won't want to miss this tale about Florentyna Kane in this sequel to Kane And Abel.

  • The Name of the Wind
    • Rated 5 stars

Rothfuss bids fair to be another Robert Jordan or Terry Goodkind with his debut novel, Name OF The Wind. Kvothe is a complex yet likable character, and one is left eagerly waiting at the end of this first book in the Kingkiller Chronicle to find out answers to several questions: What happened to Denna? How did Kvothe meet Bast? What's up with the scrael appearing? Can't wait for the next book!

  • The English American

Philippa isn't like the rest of her family, with her red hair, klutziness, and bohemian-artist tendencies. When she finds out she's adopted and that her biological parents were Americans, and sets out on a journey to meet them, things suddenly make sense....or do they? Personal note: I really enjoyed the character of Pippa SO MUCH in this book.

  • Lady Macbeth: A Novel
    • Rated 5 stars

You won't find any of Shakespeare's "Lead on MacDuff", "Is that a dagger I see before me?" or "Out, out, damned spot!" in this lovely historical fiction novel about Lady Macbeth. Susan Fraser King has penned a very plausible history of Gruadh's life in medieval Scotland prior to and after her marriage to Mac Bethad Mac Finlach (Macbeth). The descriptions of Scottish life, scenery, and culture all enliven the tale and do not detract from the plot; likewise, the historical data enriches the story. Wonderful read and definitely on my Top 10 Of 2008 list.
