I'm a social media junky and professional blogger living in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have a couple decades of marketing, direct marketing, database marketing, email marketing and online marketing under my belt. As much as I love the Internet, I'm a book snob and can't wait until the next great business or marketing book comes out so I can buy... more »

  • Twitterville: How Businesses Can Thrive in the New Global Neighborhoods
    • Rated 5 stars

So many social media books are light on examples but full of opinions. Shel Israel has written an incredible book that documents the birth and growth of Twitter in the business community. Shel walks through examples for profitable businesses, non-profit and charitable businesses and even touches on government use of Twitter. As well, he includes remarkable stories of humanity and how Twitter is changing the world we live in. This book is a must read for social media and marketing professionals.

  • How to Get Rich
    • Rated 5 stars

Whenever I introduce this book to friends, I never mention the name of it. The title is so cheesy, I'm surprised it's sold at all. It's not a book on How to Get Rich... it's really a book to inspire you and show you how to repeat success over and over and over again. There are some incredible messages in this book as well... such as not equating happiness to wealth. Felix Dennis is an incredibly humorous writer. This is one of my favorites of all time.

  • The Social Network Business Plan: 18 Strategies That Will Create Great Wealth
    • Rated 3 stars

David Silver takes an interesting perspective on how to monetize social networks. I'm not sure that it incorporates all the means of driving revenue through social networks, but I agree that it is a powerful one. I wish David could have shared more examples of actual growth and revenue models across many of the networks he's had experience with.

My favorite Gladwell book to date. I love the diverse stories that Mr. Gladwell put together in this book to show that, for some, a series of fascinating events can predict success. Amazing examples and a book that I burned through in 1 day!

  • The Perfection of Marketing

    The Perfection of Marketing

    by James Connor
    • Rated 5 stars

When I first picked up this book, I thought "Oh no... a book on branding." I believe the world has seen a transition from a marketer owning the brand to the world (via Internet) owning a brand. However, James Connor tells a compelling story about the value of brands.

That's only a portion of the book, though. The book isn't a step for step guide, rather it's told in a story format, as if James was consulting with a real client (which it could have been). This makes the book easy to read and much more memorable - with time to bring up all the arguments that a typical CEO might have.

Connor walks through all the important factors in planning your corporate marketing strategy - including SEO, the web, and most importantly - measuring Return on your Marketing Investment. It's a fantastic book that every CEO, President or CMO should pick up.

  • Content Rich: Writing Your Way to Wealth on the Web

If you’re writing a book on any subject, I believe you’re telling the world that you’re unequivocally an expert in the field with accurate and detailed evidence to back it up. In this case, I think Jon Wuebben is knowledgeable of writing content and attracting search engines, but I found it startling that the book left out key methods for SEO Copywriting. This is not the thorough guide that it proclaims to be.

  • The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google
    • Rated 4 stars

I loved the book up until Nicholas began postulating on the coming disaster when humans begin to be controlled by computers. The history of computing and the parallels to the power industry still make this a fantastic read.

  • The Intellectual Devotional: American History (Unabridged)

I really enjoyed this book. I believe the 1-page per topic was a fantastic format and the author threw some fascinating tidbits in with every topic (pay attention to the footnotes!)

  • Email Marketing By the Numbers: How to Use the World's Greatest Marketing Tool to Take Any Organization to the Next Level

Chris and Ali compiled an amazing amount of information and advise for Email Marketing by the Numbers. If you own or operate a business with email marketing, this book is the only one with any substance that should be required reading for your staff.

As an email marketer, you will read this book, write notes, and dog ear pages cover to cover. On any given day, you should flip open a page - each and every one is filled with practical advise that works. According to all studies, Email Marketing has the highest return on investment than ANY other medium. Why wouldn't you invest a little bit in a book that could transform your company?

Buy a copy for each of your staff today.

  • Crypto: How the Code Rebels Beat the Government Saving Privacy in the Digital Age
    • Rated 5 stars

This book read like a spy novel! Not simply a book about Crypto but about the government trying to out maneuver the people. I think Levy did a great job of pushing why either side would want to win this battle... but in the end, the people won. That's what is supposed to happen in a democracy and a free country! Fantastic book.
