I'm a social media junky and professional blogger living in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have a couple decades of marketing, direct marketing, database marketing, email marketing and online marketing under my belt. As much as I love the Internet, I'm a book snob and can't wait until the next great business or marketing book comes out so I can buy... more »

The most comprehensive book on business and new media to date. Brian has done an exceptional job explaining how we got here, what it is, why it's different and what to do about it. This should be a must-read for all communications managers, PR professionals and marketers.

Having just started my own business, this book truly reinforced many of the feelings I had. It differs so much from the noise you hear about running a successful business. Quit listening to all the know-it-alls that work 100 hours a week and don't have a life. Put a copy of this book on every employee's desk and read it every day.

This may be the most important book that Seth Godin has ever written. It should inspire anyone with an ounce of entrepreneurship to make the leap and live their dream.

  • Twitterville: How Businesses Can Thrive in the New Global Neighborhoods
    • Rated 5 stars

So many social media books are light on examples but full of opinions. Shel Israel has written an incredible book that documents the birth and growth of Twitter in the business community. Shel walks through examples for profitable businesses, non-profit and charitable businesses and even touches on government use of Twitter. As well, he includes remarkable stories of humanity and how Twitter is changing the world we live in. This book is a must read for social media and marketing professionals.

  • How to Get Rich

Whenever I introduce this book to friends, I never mention the name of it. The title is so cheesy, I'm surprised it's sold at all. It's not a book on How to Get Rich... it's really a book to inspire you and show you how to repeat success over and over and over again. There are some incredible messages in this book as well... such as not equating happiness to wealth. Felix Dennis is an incredibly humorous writer. This is one of my favorites of all time.

  • The Social Network Business Plan: 18 Strategies That Will Create Great Wealth
    • Rated 3 stars

David Silver takes an interesting perspective on how to monetize social networks. I'm not sure that it incorporates all the means of driving revenue through social networks, but I agree that it is a powerful one. I wish David could have shared more examples of actual growth and revenue models across many of the networks he's had experience with.

My favorite Gladwell book to date. I love the diverse stories that Mr. Gladwell put together in this book to show that, for some, a series of fascinating events can predict success. Amazing examples and a book that I burned through in 1 day!

  • The Perfection of Marketing

    The Perfection of Marketing

    by James Connor
    • Rated 5 stars

When I first picked up this book, I thought "Oh no... a book on branding." I believe the world has seen a transition from a marketer owning the brand to the world (via Internet) owning a brand. However, James Connor tells a compelling story about the value of brands.

That's only a portion of the book, though. The book isn't a step for step guide, rather it's told in a story format, as if James was consulting with a real client (which it could have been). This makes the book easy to read and much more memorable - with time to bring up all the arguments that a typical CEO might have.

Connor walks through all the important factors in planning your corporate marketing strategy - including SEO, the web, and most importantly - measuring Return on your Marketing Investment. It's a fantastic book that every CEO, President or CMO should pick up.

If you’re writing a book on any subject, I believe you’re telling the world that you’re unequivocally an expert in the field with accurate and detailed evidence to back it up. In this case, I think Jon Wuebben is knowledgeable of writing content and attracting search engines, but I found it startling that the book left out key methods for SEO Copywriting. This is not the thorough guide that it proclaims to be.

I loved the book up until Nicholas began postulating on the coming disaster when humans begin to be controlled by computers. The history of computing and the parallels to the power industry still make this a fantastic read.
