In a past life I was a junior high and high school English teacher. I loved teaching literature and loved being able to read books I could recommend to my students. One of my favorite sayings is "He that won't read good books is no better off than he that can't."
If all the world were Christian it might not matter if all the world were uneducated. But as it is, a cultural life will exist outside the church whether it exists inside or not.
To be ignorant and simple now, not to be able to meet the enemy on their ground, would be to throw down our weapons and to betray our uneducated bretheren who have no defense but us against the attack of the heathen.
Good philosophy must exist if for no other reason than bad philosophy needs to be answered.
