I am retired from all sorts of things. I live with my wife of 42 years on a small farm in North Dakota near the Canadian border. We support a few chickens and three fat horses. I work on the farm and do a fair amount of volunteer work besides. I have read lots of books. The books on my shelf are some I will admit to having read.

    Hi Don,

If you are receiving this note, then you are a member of the Minneapolis-St.Paul-Minnesota Group. I just wanted to let our group members know that the discussion thread for the April/May 2009 Group Read – Growing An Inch by Stanley Gordon West – has been posted. I just finished this book myself. I enjoyed it thoroughly and am looking forward to the group discussion. I hope you are able to join us.

Also, we are currently voting for our next group read – which will be for the June-July-August timeframe. Please stop by and vote for your preferred books for the group read by Saturday, April 25.

    Too funny!

I, too, go off on tangents. I ran a political blog for a couple of years. In doing research on a topic, I'd invariably find a related topic and off I'd go! I have reams of partially written theses all over the place, a huge backlog of books I've not finished (and some not even begun), as well as a budget found no longer viable. It is a true statement that my top budge expenses are, in order, 1) mortgage, 2) animal feed and care, 3) books, 4) utitilies, 5-) everything else.

My hat's off to your wife!

Working on this group is my pleasure. Regina really did reveal an appetite in Shelfari membership, didn't she? She owns the group - I just help out when she is otherwise distracted as she is at the moment due to the move to Houston.

This group is RUINING my 2009 goal of reducing book purchases! I was so impressed by both the nominations for this month and that "Ancillary Reading" thread that I'm at serious risk of blowing what little money I have.

All of you members have caused me to build a deep lust after some of these books!

Thanks, Don. I have a batch of potting soil made up already and your post saved onto my computer for future reference. I had to use the ag lime as my dolomite is still not here but am expecting it in about a week. Then I'll get a batch of COF (can't remember what the initials stand for...) mixed up and start planting the cooler weather crops. I used all of my fertilizer from last year on my lettuce so am just waiting to pull together the ingredients for the home made stuff to continue on with my garden!

Have you tried his potting soil mix?

Hello, Don. Do you have Solomon's book? I want to make some potting soil (without his fertilizer) and can't remember the ratios. Was it 1 part soil to 1 part compost to 1/4 part agricultural lime?

Hi Don, well, I am pleased that you do know some of the country so it won't be a total shock. Some parts are, you know. There is rich and there is very poor, the latter can be a horrendous shock if you are not expecting it. So I wish you a good trip, Bon Voyagé. I would like to hear all about it whe you have time after you come back and have rested. So best of British to you on the journey front.
Talk to you in a the future, if you are willing that is, and best wishes to Pamela.

Oh Don, you will find thinghs so different but Kerala is a fascinating place we have seen t.v. progs. of this part of India. We also like to see the Northern parts of India too, the mountains and the large lakes with their Victorian/Edwardian housebpats, the tranquil scenes of birds etc. Maybe another time. How long are you going for? Hope the trip is everything you hoped for, I am sure it will be and away from all that snow and cold! Will take some time getting there won't it?

Don He is beautiful. I like Batman, of course it is slightly long when you want him to do anything when you are on his back like walk on Batman, gee up Batman or some such. I suppose it might get down to Batty or just Bat. Love the colouring though..
It is frosty here this morning so it is bright. Makes a change of recent weather conditions. Wish it would get warmer for goos. I know it is February but a few years back in the 1990s we had really warm February, well late Feb. Can't wait. to get goin on the garden.
Take it easy, ride out the weather if you will pardon the pun.
