A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where our minds can get both provocation and privacy. ~Edward P. Morgan

As you ll see from my shelf I read a little bit of everything. As... more »

Ahhh! Good old Dickens! It's very interesting how he started out his writing career. Now some clever clogs have tried to translate that medium for the 21st century. For a clearer picture check out: http://www.unbound.co.uk/ when you get a moment.

    We'll chat later.

Good catching up; good looking out. Yeah I'm becoming increasingly adept at the knit thing...watch this space. And the list of young talented female writers from back home continues - Chibundu Onuzo (due out early 2012). What is more, she's a fellow King's graduate.

Daniel, you are more than welcome, I hope you enjoy "Tales of the Dying Earth" as much as I have over the years. Shortly after reading it I read the "Lyonesse Trilogy" by Jack Vance and it was equally good. I've just ordered "The Demon Princes" by Jack Vance and am chomping at the bit to get my hands on this five story collection. I have just regained 20/20 vision in my left eye after cataract surgery 4 weeks ago and am scheduled for surgery on the right eye this Monday, hopefully with the same result. I really enjoyed "The Fourth Realm Travellers Trilogy" as well so I am delighted to read your laudatory comments about it. Hope all is well with you and yours. Enjoy and READ ON...

Daniel, "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, inventive, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time reflecting on the joy it brings me and its life changing impact on my reading addiction. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into life-like visions and you will then understand the sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous literary experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to take a journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful worlds as penned by a master scribe then you will want to read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece...

Daniel, thanks for responding. I love your system and would like to say I have a system but I'm to random for that. There are so many books I want to read that that my regimen is more about what's next on my shelf that interests me. Because I am on a mission to get more YA's to read, especially boys who tend to stop reading when they reach puberty, I've become heavily involved in reading coming-of-age stories that will interest them so that I can recommend books that will capture their wanderlust and thirst for knowledge. I had forgotten how imaginative and fun coming-of-age fantasy/adventure stories and humorous teen life can be and I'm delighted that I'm once again re-experiencing the tension/anguish of teen angst, frustration, and goofy behavior that came with facing the hormone storms of my own youth, IT'S GREAT! In my mind the joys of reading have so expanded my reach, imagination, and awe of the human spirit that I will be forever grateful for having developed a passion for the written word at such a young age, it's been my salvation and touchstone for success in all areas of my life. Sorry for rambling but just wanted to impart how random my reading system tends to be and why I'm reading so many YA stories at this late stage in my life. READ ON...

Daniel hi, I've come across a story that is so exeptional I had to write you about it. It's titled "Nathan's Run" by John Gilstrap and I think you will find it as moving and inspiring as I did. While a fictional account it is an emotional coming-of-age journey that will pull at your heartstrings and give you pause to think about the power of the human spirit. Enjoy and READ ON...

Daniel, thank you for friending me. Your bookshelf is equally impressive although more non-fiction than mine. As you can tell I've always been a bit of a dreamer so I've always had a bent for coming-of-age fantasy/adventure and mystery/thriller fiction novels although I love history both fiction and nonfiction. A book I think you would love is "The Practice of Management" by Peter Drucker and "The Peter Principle" by Robert Townsend. Merry Christmas to you and yours, enjoy, and READ ON...
