Picked this up at an antique store. My god the writing is awful. Really bad.

This is Cherryh's parallel, alien universe that is a fun companion to the Alliance-Union 'verse. I believe it is actually set on the opposite direction from Earth as the Union, but a long way out.

She writes from the perspective of the Cat-Like Hani and excels in bringing us into their mode of thinking, thereby introducing us to all of the aliens and their miscommunications, political intrigue, and interspecies fighting.

The lynchpin of the series is the human captive, Tully, who escapes the aggressive Kif to seek refuge with the Hani. This sets off a series of events that culminates in a showdown between 3 species, and sets the stage for more intrigue to be resolved in the next 2 books.

This book is an excellent introduction Reynolds universe. He weaves time and space spanning tales that, when come to conclusion are wholly satisfying and entertaining.

I believe that I need to re-read it now too...

I really enjoyed this trilogy. I swear that George Lucas read these and ideas show up in Star Wars. Especially the Huts.

The fact that it starts small and ends with cultures colliding on a large scale means it is a fun ride.

On occasion I would have to put this book down because I felt weird. The fact that what I was reading could do that blew me away.

The idea of virtual reality being activated by a feather you deep throat...oddness!
