  • 101 Questions to Ask Before You Get Engaged (Wright, H. Norman & Gary J. Oliver)
    • Rated 3 stars

This book offers some useful questions to consider before asking someone to marry you. Hopefully, many of these questions will have already been answered earlier in the relationship. While some of the author's questions are repetitive, most of them provide an opportunity to dig into one another's backgrounds, convictions, methods, and dreams.

  • Healing the Masculine Soul: God's Restoration of Men to Real Manhood
    • Rated 1 stars

While this book addresses an important topic, its value is ruined by the strange examples the author gives of having men relive their dreams or experiences in some sort of pseudo-spiritual state. The author names several examples wherein he asks men to close their eyes, walk through their dreams, and visualize what Jesus is saying in their dreams. This undermines the author's credibility and casts doubt on the ability of faith (instead of psychobabble) to address the subject matter. This was such a turn-off that I quit reading the book after a couple of chapters.

  • So Help Me God: The Ten Commandments, Judicial Tyranny, and the Battle for Religious Freedom
    • Rated 5 stars

Judge Moore is a model of true statesmanship and an unashamed Christian. May we all follow his example of acknowledging the authority of God no matter who tells us that we can’t. May we always seek to choose as our governors those who acknowledge that God is supreme and that they owe their first allegiance to him.

  • Your Church Can Thrive: Making the Connections That Build Healthy Congregations
    • Rated 3 stars

While this book does offer some practical advice and does approach the subject from the appropriate perspective of building God’s kingdom, it leaves something to be desired. The author starts off well and ends up simply offering a much shorter rendition of “The Purpose-Driven Church” (Rick Warren), a book about which I would prefer not to be reminded.

  • Under the Unpredictable Plant: an Exploration in Vocational Holiness
    • Rated 3 stars

Read on the recommendation of a friend from whom I sought advice about vocational decisions. The author is insightful and asks the hard questions.

  • They Were Single Too: 8 Biblical Role Models
    • Rated 3 stars

This book addresses the vocation of singleness without reverting to the old “tips for finding a mate” routine.

While the author raises some important points, he often fails to encourage singles by engaging in “woe is me” commentary about his own experiences. Some sharing of his experiences is helpful, but the continual references to how horrible single life is (for example, the torture of attending weddings) only serve to discourage the author’s target readership.

The author includes a few references to biblical terms that raise questions about the validity of the author’s exegetical processes. Perhaps the points he mentions are exegetically valid; I will spend more time researching these at a later opportunity. One area of concern is the author’s statement that a Greek word occurs in the Old Testament; the Old Testament is written in Hebrew. This implies that the author only consulted the Septuagint and did not complete a proper exegetical comparison of the Greek word (LXX) and the original Hebrew word.
