Taxes... sexy. I used to have an interest in accounting but my interest in non-academic activities in college side-swiped that idea (or, at least, put a fork in my future path to who knows where).

Netherland -- yes, by Joseph O'Neill. One of friends on shelfari recommended it and I wanted to pass on the favor. Having sneaked a peak at your shelf, I think you will like it. Enjoy.

joy is telling people that they are stupid for not agreeing with you...

glad to be your friend. i like your shelf and have already adopted one of your as a "book to read." i hope you will find some good stuff on my shelf as well.

i do have to share this... i am an opinionated jerk... i hated "The Devil In The White City." just had to get that off my chest. it wasn't that i found the writing poor or the story uninteresting, but that it angered me that the author, publisher and bookstores all agreed to see an obvious work of historical fiction as "non-fiction." well, that just got my goat, especially since i was a non-fiction junkie at the time. if we can agree to agree on that one, this friendship should last.

just curious -- what do you analyze? also, you should check out "Netherland." It was awesome. You should also join my book club. I will send you an invite. I think you would be a good addition to my legion of followers.

    Take care,

    Matt

There's a couple volumes called "The Annotated HP Lovecraft" that collects his best stories along with some historical/biographical annotations by S.T. Joshi, who's sort of the premier Lovecraft scholar/biographer. The Dunwich Horror, the Colour Out of Space, At the Mountains of Madness and, of course, the Call of Cthulhu are all good stories to start with. If you want to get fancy, pick up a copy of "The Dunwich Horror and Others" from Arkham House Publishing--the first publishing house that made Lovecraft legit. Del Ray has a handful of cheap, accessible collections out there (I think "The Best of HP Lovecraft" is the place to start with those), and they've published a lot of the spin-off anthologies as well (including "Shadows Over Bakerstreet", which is basically fan-fic of Sherlock Holmes in the Lovecraft world.).
