Here are some strongly held feelings about books I've read (this should tell you all there is to know about me in the context of an online book club):

2 books I absolutely love: Jorge Amado's Gabriela, Clove & Cinnamon and Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of... more »

It's rare I find someone else who has read "Cereus Blooms at Night." One of my favourite books, and also, perhaps, one of the most heartbreaking.

Greetings! I'm new to Shelfari, but just joined your multicultural children's lit group...I see you're a fan of Nalo Hopkinson--I'm so glad she's so well known outside of Canada (where I'm from). My first picture book, BIRD, came out last fall and we won several honors and awards; I'm trying to get my YA novel, A Wish After Midnight, into young readers' hands, and would appreciate any contact or advice you might have. Trailers for both my books can be found at my blog, www.zettaelliott.wordpress.com--and maybe I'll make one for my memoir, Stranger in the Family, since you like that particular genre. Nice to "meet" you!

    Hi,

Do you know if Caitlin Flanagan is still featured in Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker? Since I enjoyed the book (To Hell with All That) I'd like to read more from her.

    Hi there,
I have really been just a lurker on Shelfari recently, but thought of you while watching those incredible Jamaican runners this week - truly amazing! I noted the " Black Britain" book on your recent list and have marked it for future investigation - it's a subject I want to read more about.

How are you?? We have to catch up soon. Summer is so busy for us that I don't get as much down time to email and catch up with friends. I hope you are well!

He's great! He mostly sleeps through the night now, and since he now simply must grab anything I'm holding, I have slowed down with my reading as well.

Hi, thank you for these leads. I am certain that these authors are not available in India, but I will find a way of getting some of their books. Would they be available in the US you think? V

Hi, Artemis, just wanted to let you know that my pursuit of the CLR James book has hit a few brick walls, but it is still on my list, just a little further back! Lots of "stuff" going on at home just now so reading has been slower but still my refuge. Hope all is well with you.

Hi D. , long time no see! All's well here, have a new grandson (the other son's first). I've just finished Fruit of the Lemon by Andrea Levy - found it in the library . It's a lot simpler in plot and scope than Small Island, but the narrative voice is the same and just as accomplished. I enjoyed it a lot.

All's well in Antics. Maybe this summer we can get a proper group read going.

I went through a purge of sorts and realized I hadn't done the place a bit of good since you invited me on. I'll give it another go.

Hi, don't worry I don't want to be your friend. I just appreciate the fact that you have "A House for Mr Biswas" as one of your favorite books. I read it in high school many years ago and it's still the only thing I've read that helped me understand my own father.

Hi D, nice to hear from you. Hope you and your loved ones are fine. Have read Max and the Maximonsters for the first time with grandson Linus this week, and he was duly impressed! Lovely. Olivia is now 7 months old and beginning to sit up very nicely, and I think I'll have to start looking for the first books to read to her!
I enjoyed "The Yacoubian Building" byA. Al Aswany a lot. A book about the people living in an old appartment block in Cairo at the time of the Koeweit invasion. Very informative, very interesting, and a very good read too.

    Artemis98,

What a very pleasant surprise! Welcome to the Homeschooling and Unschooling group! Please feel free to introduce yourself in the thread entitled, "Let's Get to Know Each Other Better", if you feel inclined. Don't forget to add relevant books to the group shelf, start new discussions and contribute to the current ones.
