“It's hard to review this book without comparing it to the Kite Runner. This one was more compelling socially, but the characters were not as well rounded. Both were gripping for different reasons... it is hard to fathom that such things have happened in our lifetimes. ”

“This was one of my favorite Card novels... and I didn't think the Mormon parts detracted in any way. If you read Card enough, you realize that he includes his religion in every novel in some way, but without preaching it. It's just a part of who he is and what interests him. ”

“What I loved about this book was the detail. The author researched the train circuses that folded during the depression and each incident was from a real circus. I loved the framing of the story, with Jacob's recollections. ”
