Ellipsis

Thanks to some good poet friends, I have made my way into the world of Shelfari and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

In short, I am a poet and aspiring author who loves to read. My screen name is the one I use when performing at local open mics and such. I published a chapbook entitled "A Glimpse of My Soul" in 2003... more »

  • Rock and Fire - Love Poetry from the Core
    • Rated 3 stars

This poetry collection is a hair above Mr. Lacy's first publication. Again, the pieces are short and, based on the description and cover art, not quite the "blaze of glory" that I was hoping for. As said previously, Mr. Lacy is a charismatic performer, but this body of work is only mildly representative of the rock and fire that he exudes in person.

Patti LaBelle is one of the most influential artists of our time and her autobiography reflects this fact. From the traumatic experiences of her childhood to her eventual triumph on the stage and screen, she has shown herself to be a true lady, a phenomenal singer, and a noteworthy humanitarian. The book itself reads very much like a conversation with "little-miss-over-the-rainbow" herself and is thereby an easy and inspiring read. At the end of it all, i was very appreciative that "Patsy Holte" had taken the time to share her revelations of a lifetime with the world.

  • Makes Me Wanna Holler: A Young Black Man in America
    • Rated 5 stars

Every African-American, Black, Negro or whatever we are calling ourselves these days in the United States needs to read this book! It is an autobiographical tale written by Mr. McCall to showcase the plight of young black men in America, but it is not just written for black men. Black women need to read this book as well so that we can better identify with the struggle that our brothers face on a daily basis. I fully believe that this work can contribute to better relations between Black men and women in the United States.

  • Jarhead Movie Tie-In: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles
    • Rated 5 stars

I saw a preview for the movie and immediately wanted to see it to support Jamie Foxx, but had no idea of what I was really getting myself into. The film, however, proved to be quite entertaining so I picked up a copy of the book at a local bargain store and dove right in. Just as I expected . . . the book was exceptional! From the military colloquialisms to the vivid descriptions, Mr. Swofford has proven himself as something far more important than a "jarhead". He is an author, and a damned good one.

  • Only Twice I'Ve Wished for Heaven (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Cloth))
    • Rated 5 stars

This coming-of-age story is near and dear to my heart, not just because I own an autographed copy, but because it is more than just the average coming-of-age story. Ms. Trice carefully crafts a world that is juxtaposed against itself while telling the story of two young girls and their very different lives and destinies. Set against an urban backdrop, she draws you into places that are both familiar and uncomfortable and, by the time the end comes, you are almost ready to start the journey over again. An excellent read for young and old alike.

Mosley is a masterful storyteller. After having written so many stories that revolved around the character of Easy Rawlings, one might think that things would start to be redundant or boring. Cinnamon Kiss is quite the opposite. Mr. Mosley weaves his way skillfully through various settings and dilemmas and leaves you breathless as you hurry on to see what happens but want to slow down to savor every moment of the journey. I finished this book in less than two days and immediately headed to the store to pick up Blonde Faith. Without a shadow of a doubt, Mr. Mosley will go down as one of the greatest fiction writers of our time.

I read this book after many years of not reading any of Ms. Steel's work. In high school, I was a lover of anything that she wrote, but my taste matured a bit in college and, though I still receive fan club letters every quarter, I haven't picked up one of her novels in years. I found this among the bargain books at a local bookstore and decided to see if her work still held its old magic for me. In the beginning, it did. She masterfully weaves together four distinct characters and drew me in almost immediately. Unfortunately, the story fizzled and died about halfway through when it seemed as though she decided to wrap things up in a neat little package, regardless to how unrealistic. By the end, I remembered what had endeared me to Ms. Steel's work as a teenager, but also what had turned me off about it. In short, even those who write fiction should take the time to craft a complete story of believable details and dialogue. I think now, as I'm sure that I did when I finished her last novel, that Ms. Steel may be writing far too many books a year for any of them to be very good.

  • Their Eyes Were Watching God
    • Rated 5 stars

Zora Neale Hurston is one of the most prolific writers in modern times and this novel proves so. The title is what initially piqued my interest, but I was immediately engrossed in Janie's tale, straining with her to reach her place of purpose. Their Eyes Were Watching God was also made into an excellent film adaptation starring Halle Berry and Michael Ealy.

If I Love You, Am I Trapped Forever is a story of young love. As a teenager, I was certain that the story related to my own experiences and, even as a adult now, I can still see the value in it. This is a must-read for young adults who may think themselves in love. As it did for me, it will open your eyes to a world of possibilites beyond your immediate circumstances.

I am hopelessly addicted to The Young & The Restless. From the debonair and devilish ways of Victor Newman to the secret identity of Brad Carlton, from the tawdry mother-daughter relationship between Jill Foster-Abbott and Kay Chancellor to the new arrival of such introverts as Devon Hamilton and extroverts like Amber Moore, from the awkward attraction between Cane Ashby and Lily Winters to the supreme hotness of Nick Newman, I can't get enough and this book is for people like me. I know, I need help and maybe one day I'll get it, but for now, I'm loving me so Y&R!
