Something vaguely to do with writing/illustrating children's books, librarian, and/or being involved in helping with museums. She has several ideas. She's in something called the TIP Scholars program that practically let's her make her own major.

Oh, one of the things she was considering was an English major combined with Psychology and Library Science.

She is currently majoring in English. If she stays in it (and she truly is interested in it), she'd probably double or triple major with certain goals in mind (she has two or three she's trying to decide on). In the meantime she's trying to get in Interior Design which is under the College of Architecture. In a way it's funny. Both of our kids say they don't want to be in architecture since both my husband and I are in it and enough is enough. Our son is about to graduate in a few days with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and our daughter wants to transfer into Interior Design. Both fields are still related to architecture in one form or another.

She's taking "fewer hours than she should" because she wants to make good grades in order to change her major.

    She took 15 hours.
12 hours is the minimum for a full time student.
    17 is recommended.

Well, I hope that the winter break has started for you and you now will have a chance to read a little :)
Funny, my daughter was at loose ends in (this) first semester of college.
Earning the IB Diploma in high school was so intense that the college curriculum actually gives her time to do things like sleep & read.
Now she feels guilty and wonders if she's taking too few hours :D
As to good reading ... there's been a ton since around August or so when the authors just kept pouring them out.
This is a lazy way of answering but look at my shelves ... especially the "favorites" shelf.

I just finished A Girl She Used to Be, it is about a girl that has been in the witness protection program since she was 6 yrs old, after seeing a crime by the mafia. Her parents have been killed and she is the only survivor running for the rest of her life because the case was a failure. In the setting of this book she is almost thirty, but she flashes back a lot to growing up on the run. It was very good, and I hear they are making a movie of it. It was picked up by the same producer that made the Notebook into a movie. I am pretty excited. You should definetly look into it, it was an awesome read.

The I.B. program is an international one.
They give less leeway for changing dates.
If HISD closes the school, they will also insist that no student attends any academic, etc. activity.

I'm getting worried that my daughter won't be able to take the I.B. tests and the finals due to schools closing down because of this Swine Flu. That would mean she can't go to college for a good year.
