I spent the first stage of my reading life in the Okinawa, and most of my literary materials were from the library. Since we couldn't afford new books, I settled for the library routine and the second-hand encyclopedia set my dad bought from a friend. When we moved to North Carolina, I was about 8 years old. My dad was in the military so his paycheck covered mostly the necessities and leftovers were for savings. Then we discovered another great source for my needs--garage sales. I was amazed that people sold their books for 10 cents a piece. Most of the books were passionate romances that at the age of 8, I shouldn't have been reading.. but the experience opened my mind.

I began reading at the age of 4 and never stopped. Still, books are costly. In the US, I settled for garage sales and saving like crazy for must reads; here in the Philippines, books are still expensive so I'm happy with the constant visits to Recto and the occasional splurge at the bookstore..
