What does it take to win a Gastoni?
Well, for starters, you better write a book on a topic I love. Next, your writing style has to be exquisite (to the point of awe and envy). Finally, your story telling has to be transporting. To sum it up, I quote Somerset:

“When I read a book I seem to read it with my eyes only, but now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me.”

On a more personal note, the time I spent reading and listening to books this year was pure escapism. It felt like I spent most of it in a hospital waiting room (which is not true). When I’d start obsessing about my girl Gracie’s cancer I’d crack a book and ride it hard to block the worst of my fears. At night, when I needed to find a path to sleep, I’d take the easy road and escape down a story line. A good book is a gift.

Our family has so much to be thankful for this year. For starters, Carrie and I have our girl back! She now has about an inch of fine blond hair sticking straight out of her 5 year old head. At school they call her Q-tip. Her teachers call her Q-T-tip. I’ll post a couple holiday pictures of the family up on her website: caringbridge.org/visit/gracegaston

Your friendship is counted among my many blessings. Merry Christmas to you and your family, My best for the New Year, Dave

Dear David: I know I'm from Boston and you're from NY but we should put our differences aside briefly. Especially since we have books in common. I had my debut novel published in April after years of rejections (from NY agents!) It's called HUNTING THE KING and, truthfully, may be something you'd enjoy. The novel revolves around a charismatic young woman named Molly O’Dwyer. Molly was five years old when she witnessed her mother die in a fire. She never knew her father. After her mother’s death, she was raised on the campus of a Jesuit college. Now an archaeologist, she has been recruited to participate on a dig in war torn Iraq. As a scientist she is compelled to discover whatever or whoever is buried under the sands of ancient Babylon. As an observant Catholic, she is scared that whatever she finds will have devastating consequences for her faith. There is a wonderful YouTube book trailer well worth watching if you have the chance. If you do get to see, please let me know what you think. Thanks. Peter

    HI David

The cruise book is doing amazing. Over 600 copies sold in past 5 months and it is now in bookstores in Baltimore, San Francisco and Seattle. I am doing book talks and have
been on radio and will be interviewed on tv in the Fall.

Here is funny article written on book
    http://www.marinij.com/fairfax/ci_8369678

Easiest way to get book is on Amazon or lulu.com at www.permanentpassenger.com

Love to hear your feedback and please review it. You are right, I wrote book because so many people were curious about life behind the scenes on a cruise ship.

    Thanks for support

He's a genius feline and has great literary taste. By the way for your trip to Australia and N.Z., he highly recommends Tim Winton's Cloudstreet and Peter Temple's The Broken Shore.

    Dear David,

I missed seeing you at the writer's conference meeting Thursday; I hope you're OK. The big gossip is that Amazon is going to force all POD publishers to use Booksurge. Do you know anything about this. I just switched to Lightning Source to do my book, so I wonder how that is going to play out. I hope we get to run into one another soon.

I just joined today after reading about your new position on PublishersMarketplace. But I must tell you, as a person with background in making websites user friendly, I am very frustrated by this site. I'd be happy to talk to you if you'd like.
