I am an avid reader of books from every genre under the sun...unfortunately too many to remember.

I will placing opinions on books I have read since joining, whilst adding those that sit on my shelves slowly over time. Whilst I don't intend to add many of the books I have read but don't own (or no longer own) I'm sure the odd one or two... more »

It is difficult to review a book like The Cider House Rules without going into masses of details on the themes and topics covered. Suffice to say, it is an enjoyable read dealling with some difficult topics.

It is typical Irving, reminding me of both "The World According to Garp" and "A Prayer for Owen Meaney"; if you enjoy the work of Irving have no fears about this one to your shelves.

An interesting handbook about politics both 'on' and 'of' the internet....a good read for the most part, although my personal preference would have been for it to focus solely on politics ON the internet.

It is, as it claims on the cover, "A Very Short Introduction", and as such I feel a bit harsh for criticising its being too basic...

It is primarily a book for people who have given little thought to political philosophy rather than a book for someone who has already given political philosophy some thought albeit in an unstructured manner. If you haven't really given the field much thought, this book is a quick and easy place to start, with a useful guide to further reading at the back.

  • John Stuart Mill

If you have even a passing interest in political philosophy or victorian history you will probably enjoy Reeve's biography of Mill.

Don't let the 600-odd pages put you off, it is actually a remarkably quick and easy-going read.

A simple premise that quickly becomes an advert TalentSmart.

..it's only because I'm feeling generous that it got two stars; one and a half would be a more appropriate rating.

  • Lost in Cyburbia

Just to be clear, my edition was the slightly differently title "Cyburbia: The dangerous idea that's changing how we live and who we are"

Basically a popular read on the nature of the network in our modern lives, tracing its links to the feedback loops of cybernetics.

Whilst Harkin finishes with "Switch off that information loop for a while...", I fear have become entrenched even deeper since this book was published a couple of weeks ago.

  • And did those feet

    by Charlie Connelly
    • Rated 4 stars

Charlie Connelly throws on his walking books to provide a combined history/travelogue of some of the famous journeys that have taken place within the British Isles as he retraces their routes. It has managed to persuade me that I should throw my walking boots on once again...cows and horses be damned!

  • Mr Majeika and the School Book Week (Young Puffin Story Books S.)
    • Rated 3 stars

Whilst no my usual taste in books, I got it free with a box of cereal, and I really will read anything. As a book for young kids it's good. Witches, wizards and magic, all in the very normal school setting. No pretentions, it is what it is.

By no means an academic book, but nonetheless provides some interesting insights into Second Life libraries

Whilst I'm not sure whether I enjoy Adrian Mole as much today as I did 20 years ago, it made me chuckle throughout. As is noted in the book, as we get older we all get more right-wing, and I did on a number of occassions find myself wondering whether Townsend is in fact a secret Daily Mail reader.
