I am an avid reader of books from every genre under the sun...unfortunately too many to remember.

I will placing opinions on books I have read since joining, whilst adding those that sit on my shelves slowly over time. Whilst I don't intend to add many of the books I have read but don't own (or no longer own) I'm sure the odd one or two... more »

In an age when the way we present ourselves is ungoing a massive overhaul, Goffman provides a useful framework for discussing the nature of the change.

Unfortunately very important important issues get lost (or at least have less impact) because of the us and them attitude of the author

A well balanced book on the topic of online reputation, which makes a nice change from the absolute libertarians who seemingly infect the web. My only criticism would be the obvious American slant, certain statements require a bit more backing than the US constitution to be recognised as universal truths this side of the Atlantic.

...and Thomas Edison invented the telephone? ...pffft...

  • The Planets

If Rothery's book on the planets was too dry [my previous review], then Sobel's book is too wet. Again, interesting enough, although this time very much focused on the relationship between us and the planets, but I would have liked a bit more of a traditional structure.

...surely there is a happy medium between these planetary extremes!

An easy enough introduction to an interesting subject. My one complaint is that it is a bit dry.

  • Dr. Johnson & Mr. Savage
    • Rated 3 stars

A look at the lives of Samuel Johnson and Richard Savage and the nature of their friendhsip. Unsurprisingly it looks far more closely at this particular relationship than the usual Johnson biography.

An enjoyable read, but I wouldn't recommend it as someone's first book about Johnson.

  • Personal History of Samuel Johnson

An enjoyable enough biography of Johnson, although I found Peter Martin's biography more interesting for its insights into the relationship between Boswell and Johnson.

...I fear I am becoming a Johnson addict.

This is a bloody awful book that shouldn't have been published in it's current state....although chapter 13 would provide a great excercise in proof reading.

An interesting quite read on the changing nature of privacy in the age of the Internet: it's not just Big Brother, but Little Brother.

    Captain Britain TPB

    by Alan Moore
    • Rated 3 stars

As Captain Britain was recently voted Britain's seventh favourite superhero, and I'd never even heard of him, I bought the book.

Very much in the style of Captain America, in fact Captain America is included in half the book along with his nemesis the Red Skull.

Nonetheless enjoyable enough, from an Englishman's perspective, with lots of English stereotypes...it even has a cameo by then Prime Minister James Callaghan!

I'll be buying the rest of the series
