I was completely unaware of the many battles and confrontations that established the path of this nation. It constantly reminded me of our issues today.

I loved the first movie, detested the second and greatly enjoyed the radio program which, contrary to popular myth did NOT create the widespread panic it has been said to have caused. I always wanted to read the book because I knew its timing was current to H.G. Wells' lifetime. It is a story very different in all but the most basic elements, and certainly more complex, than any of the alternate media of its presentation. I wanted to know it in its original. If you expect it to be like these media presentations, you will be disappointed. If you read it wondering how Wells described the situation, reactions, and process, you will enjoy it.

An enjoyable book. I particularly enjoyed seeing the differences between the book and the Albert Finney version of the film, which I greatly enjoy. They were very different, but both were good on their own.

  • The Da Vinci Code

I greatly enjoyed Da Vinci Code. Yet, when someone asks if they should read it, I tell them it depends on their background. I found the book enjoyable because all of my long life I have absorbed non-fiction and documentary works on Holy Grail legends, Knights Templar, Rosicrucians, cipher codes, and general works on Catholicism. Without this background, I think I'd have found the book largely boring. The reference to the symbols here were a delightful interpretation and linking of elements that, in reality, probably have no such link at all. It was brilliantly excecuted. All of which you miss without the background.

Written in 1991, this book remains relevant even today. Although it was written for the DOS operating system, many commands are still used for command line entries even in Windows XP. It remains a basic reference for any Windows advanced user.

  • Rose Cottage: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

The solution of the mystery in this novel was apparent to me far earlier than usual in Stewart's books. The setting and its description were lovely, making the final revelation worth the expected ending. Stewart makes the English countryside and small village come to life in this tale.

It presupposes a knowledge of C progamming, which dummies can't do. This is a dummie's book. look elsewhere.

  • THE WORK AND THE GLORY - VOLS 1 - 9 - Complete Set
    • Rated 1 stars

I was able to force myself to read through the first 6 books, the original length of the set. There were only 2 interesting characters - Will and Joshua. Everyone else was cardboard, two dimensional and entirely predictable. Very interesting to those who love reading about the early days of the Mormon Church and some of the harrowing events that happened to them as long as you don't care about characterizations or plot lines.

    Joy of Cooking

For someone who wants to REALLY cook, the older edition, such as my 1941 version is great. This was published before the arrival of large ranges of prepared foods. There are pancake mixes that do not mention a prepared pancake mix nor Bisquick. This can be the one for truly making something from "scratch".
