DarleneMarshall

I write historical romance. My novels are The Bride and the Buccaneer (coming December '09) Captain Sinister's Lady, Smuggler's Bride and Pirate's Price. All are available in print and ebook. I'm working on a new novel which will likely have a pirate or two. I'm a Gator and I've lived in North Florida most of my life.

Makes me want to grab teens reading That Other Paranormal series and say, "No, read this!"

Outstanding finish to a great series. Wonderful worldbuilding, plotting and characterization. The series should be read by all novice fantasy writers to see how it can be done without repeating tropes and settings done to death by others.

I'm still enjoying this fantasy series, partly because Bujold has succeeded in her quest to write a series not about lords and ladies, but about ordinary folks--who sometimes do extraordinary things.

Imagine "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "The Puppetmasters" told from the POV of the aliens. This was a completely engrossing story of an alien takeover of earth's people, the pockets of resistance and what happens when the two cultures begin speaking to each other. This is Meyer's debut adult novel, and I predict it will win her legions of fans who aren't already in her corner with your YA "Twilight" vampire books.

  • Rain Fall (John Rain Thrillers (Paperback))

The first novel in a thriller series that sucks you in and keeps the adrenaline flowing. John Rain is an assassin with standards--no women, no children, and his specialty is making it look natural. Lots of action and excitement.

  • The Spellman Files: A Novel

I loved this book. The Spellman's will keep you snickering and entertained as they engage in the business of being P.I.'s, where spying on people is a family affair. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

  • The Terror: A Novel

Horrific and poignant, with a depth of historical research that will satisfy readers of historical fiction. Crosses the Franklin "Northwest Passage" expedition with "The Thing" (There's even a nod to James Arness as the giant carrot), with stunning results.

  • The Perils of Pleasure
    • Rated 4 stars

One of the better historical romances I've read this year. A couple small missteps in phrasing, but overall splendidly written with characters that seem to walk off the page into life, and secondary characters and villains that are nuanced. I would definitely buy other books by this author.

  • Justinian's Flea: Plague, Empire, and the Birth of Europe
    • Rated 5 stars

Excellent history of the rise of the early European nations, and the role of bubonic plague in shaping the medieval world. It read like a thriller, and I could hardly put it down.
