As a new teacher and a lifelong reader, these books reflect many chapters of life, from stories that I remember from camping as a child, to texts through which I struggled--with a dictionary and a notebook--as a student.

To my surprise and delight, I now have the responsibility of passing some of them along, my favorites and a few long-time nemeses, to a new set of readers. "But HOW can we understand Romeo, even if we wanted to? He talks all wrong!" they cry. "Why would anyone spend their time on this? It's just reading!" And I find that I have become, so often, the defender and advocate of words, to children who have long forgotten how to imagine. « less
