“I just finished this yesterday. Utterly engaging! Well written, educated chick lit. Intelligent characters doing worthwhile things. The romance aspect of it is a complete fizzle but its not even important. The chapters bounce back and forth between 2 centuries and 2 sets of characters examining the same series of events. A well developed mystery plays out right up to the last page. I never felt lost even through a number of twists and turns. The descriptive detail is fascinating even if some of it is lost on me (I could never really picture the layout of the gardens). It does play heavily on ghosts and the supernatural but it seems believable enough. This book aims at being a more erudite and female friendly Stephen King novel. My favorite Goodman is still Lake of Dead Languages but I'm avidly looking forward to her next novel.”
