That's funny you mention that. I like Matt the best, Perrin second, Lan third, and Rand fourth. Rand is kinda like a naive twit at times...let the story continue.

Dance with Dragons has an official release of July 12th. The publisher stated they have the final manuscript and are moving into production. Expect it to be as long as Clash of Kings.

Yeah I enjoyed the Potter books. Rowlings developed a wonderfully rich world. I always thought she knew how to put just the right amount of detail into a situation. The only time she let me down was in the last book. I never could get though it. I just lost interest about half-way through when the plot sags and the characterization became just awful. I feel like she was seriously stretching her limits with Deathly Hollows.

As far as George Martin is concerned, I wanted to check out the book before watching the HBO series. I like to have my own image of characters and settings before seeing someone else’s concepts. I feel like it makes the experience of watching the series that much more interesting when you can make a reader’s comparisons.

“A Dance with Dragons” is out in July and then there are two books to be completed after that. As long as those books are I’m not too worried about getting through them in a hurry. Honestly, I’m more worried about him dying and never finishing the series more than I am concerned about wait time. Especially considering how much I liked “a Game of Thrones”.

LOL. No matter the similarities that I find, the EoTW is still a good story. For me, it "felt" very similar to LOTR. I perhaps had too high of expectations, which left me slightly bitter after the final page. However, we all bring different preferences and personalities to a story, parts that one may relate to more than another, hence mixed reviews. That being said, we usually have very similar tastes ;-)

I finished EOTW. It was a very good story. But, dang, how closely it resembles LOTR! .... I wonder, how old were you when you started the WOT series?

Cristofer, "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, inventive, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time reflecting on the joy it brings me and its life changing impact on my reading addiction. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into life-like visions and you will then understand the sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous literary experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to share my journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful worlds as penned by a master scribe then you will read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece...

Glad you got a change to read the Farseer Trilogy. If you want to continue the story, "The Tawny Man" series is really a continuation of the one you just read. I haven't read the "First Law" trilogy, but I do plan on reading it eventually. Which reminds me, did you ever read "The Name of the Wind" yet? lol. The sequel just came out, and it's even better. Hope all is well over yonder!

Yes, it does seem open hardware is rare. I imagine companies see a closed system as less risky, since it gives them more "control" over its evolution. But look at Apple? They want to control the image, and image is everything to them. Not that I totally agree with that stance... I think the global mind is always going to better than the confines of the company alone. It seems most companies compromise and create boundaries in which developers have their sandbox... and so in the sandbox we play...

The tight reigns Amazon holds does get irritating at times. However, their support for PDF has improved. There are open source tools to convert your PDF files to Amazon format, and then you simply drop them on the Kindle via USB. Not to mention... there are unnamed tools that make the Kindle not so closed... *wink, wink*

How's it going old man... I took your advice wise old sage and added "Ender in Exile" and "Canticle for Leibowitz" :-p

And you say the Kindle is bad? I've read more books than ever because they are so accessible... Gadgets rule man... but I digress... did I have a point, anyway? I don't think so. Later.

    I'll let you know ;-)

I read about the phenomena in the "ESP Enigma" and the "Short History of Nearly Everything". Sounds very intriguing! BTW, you ever read the "The Name of the Wind"? If not, I would recommend it... reminded me of "Ender's Game".
