To answer your question, you must absolutely have a good imagination in order to write a book. You must also have a command of the language in which you are writing. It's often been said that if you want to be a good writer, you must read extensively, and that is true. The more exposure you have to the written word, the better you are at composition, vocabulary, syntax, etc. But none of that makes any difference if you don't have the imagination to pull a story together. I hope that answers your question.
