Typical Chestertonian mix of wit, humor, and profundity.

    Lepanto

by G. K. Chesterton, Dale Ahlquist
    • Rated 0 stars

This book wouldn't be considered politically correct in this day and age. But those who have the stomach for it will love the excellent poetry, as well as Don John's heroism amidst indifference and pettiness. G.K. Chesterton has a way with words, and the poem makes the Battle of Lepanto and Don John's heroism come alive. The commentaries in the Ignatius Press edition enhances enjoyment of the poem.

This book is a challenge to read but it's worth it. I love Tolstoy's descriptions and characterization, especially he exposes the affectations of people.

  • Watership Down
    • Rated 0 stars

This is my second favorite book. (Well, actually, it's my fourth favorite book but my first three favorite books are "Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The REturn of the King", which really only count as one! Speaking of LOTR, "Watership Down" has a lot of similar themes and motifs that you'd suspect Richard Adams was influenced by JRRT. I had no time to verify that, though.) It's definitely a page-turner, because the rabbit world is full of danger and when reading it you're at the edge of your seat, wanting to find out what happens next. Don't be misled by the "talking rabbits" theme. This is not your fluffy bunny book. This book is actually very deep.

    Characterization is excellent.

This book will also make you learn about real rabbits.

  • Catholicism for Dummies

Good book. Easy reading, comprehensive, and orthodox. Accurate; does not misrepresent any of the teachings of the Catholic Church. (In fact, the book has a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur.) I'd recommend it for both the Catholic who wants to know more about his/her own faith, as well as for the non-Catholic who wants an introduction to it.

  • When We Were Orphans

This is one of the two Ishiguro books I've read. The other was "Remains of the Day". Frankly, I prefer "Remains of the Day". In "When We Were Orphans", Ishiguro maintains the same excellent command of the language he had in "Remains of the Day" . BUt I find the plot of "when We WEre Orphans" too loose and I was rather disappointed by the ending.

  • My Visit to Hell

This book is a modern version of Dante's "Inferno". Normally, I'm wary of "modern versions" but this book did not disappoint. It explicitly acknowledges its debt to Dante's "Inferno" (the main character in this "My Visit to Hell" is an educated person who immediately recognized "Abandon all hope" when he saw it on the manhole cover which was the portal to hell). "My Visit to Hell" had the same impact as the original, and I enjoyed reviewing my Dante while reading "My Visit to Hell". It even had the explanations to the symbolic retributions that I was not so sure of when I took up Dante in fourth year college literature! At the same time, the author succeeds in making Dante's "Inferno" relevant to contemporary society, adding sins and sinners yet inexistent in Dante's time (purveyors of cyberporn are in the circle of the panderers), and addresses modern mentalities regarding sin and morality. Just like Dante's "Inferno", this book will not leave you the same person.

  • Cool Careers for Dummies
    • Rated 0 stars

My favorite part of this book is the "Cool Careers Yellow PAges". It certainly does expand your horizons and informs you about careers that you never knew existed. There are also a lot of interesting websites. My only complaint is that some of the careers featured are rather bizarre (for example, the author actually suggests "Friend Finder" as a career).

I like the way the Pope dissects and comments on the biblical passages about Jesus. He extracts a lot of insights from the biblical passages that have never occured to me before.
