I accumulated so many books about SF before/during/after our trip, including essays & histories. That was 14 months ago & I'm still working my way thru some of them! I think hands-down my fave is "A Writer's San Francisco". The title is somewhat misleading: it has nothing to do with writing advice, but is SF as seen thru the eyes of a writer (Eric Maisel). It's a series of wonderful 2-page essays, with beautiful illustrations by Paul Madonna, including a pull-out centerfold painting. This prompted me to buy a book of his work to give to our neighbor Ken as a thank-you for helping take care of our cats while we were gone. We got it at City Lights bookstore of course, so it would have a little extra pedigree! :)

So I ended up buying Swimmy! It came today & I relived a little piece of childhood. It turns out the original edition came out 3 yrs. before I was born. Duey didn't remember it so I made him read it. :) Another kid's pic book that I highly recommend is "This is San Francisco", 1962 (the year before Swimmy came out). It's part of a series of international cities done by a Czech author/illustrator. I can't speak highly enough of it: gorgeous, happy art.

No, that's the funny thing, at first all I was doing was just pointing out the 2/22 response, and then just as I was about to hit 'post', I looked at the time. And you'll love this. Duey just walked in a minute ago & handed me a check he got. It was made out for today's date, 2/22/2010, for... drumroll... $222.25. I never would have really noticed it if we hadn't been talking about all this. I thought you'd get a kick out of that! Well, I'm off to the library & the store.
BTW, I'm glad I finally got my shelfari lists together - it inspired me to drag out a couple books that I've bought but not read yet. That's a 'sin' I usually try to avoid - my rule is, if I spend money on it, I have to read it! Kinda like how I used to tell the cats: "If you catch a bird, you have to eat it. Not just kill it for fun." Lol.

Yes, I love that one by AML - it's a classic, and is 55 years old this year believe it or not! Her diaries are also wonderful. That is my favorite genre, followed by memoir, followed by correspondence/biography/all manner of nonfiction. As you can see, I'm fictionally-challenged. I don't read a lot of it & when I do, it has a harder time really sticking with me than nonfiction. I recently read Anna Karenina & Mrs. Dalloway, for instance, and altho I enjoyed them, notice how it didn't even occur to me to list them on my shelf. I've also read War & Peace, all the Jane Austens, etc. etc. but I'm toying with the idea - for now - of keeping my shelf in line with my truest proclivities & leanings. It is interesting that Barbara Pym was the one fiction author who made the cut for my list. There is just something about her work. Humorous with an edge; sweet, but not sappily so; keenly intelligent while describing a gentler time & place in England. And they're not too long - just the right length to pick up & devour!

I love what you said about the 22/222 - wow! I am SO going to investigate numerology more. Is the book on your shelf the best one you've seen on the topic? Is that author the one whose website you told me about? I also have to find out the meaning of the number 23. It's always been my fave # since childhood, and oddly, as an adult I've met 2 people who turned out to be significant in my life whose fave # was also 23! What are the chances?

Hey Cookie! I finally got my butt on here & did some work on my shelf. I've added all the GOOD ones I can think of for now that I've read. I didn't bother listing any books I've read that I didn't love. This is the creme de la creme, which is why they all have 4-5 star reviews! :) I also listed a few that I'm reading now, but I have a ways to go to complete even my abbreviated to-read list. Then I need to root around & see what else I can do on here - have not even really explored it yet.

Yes, Christopher Alexander is probably one of my top 3 favorite authors - he is a genius. I've read 5 of his books on architecture/building so far & have at least another 5 I'd like to read. Altho they take that subject as their starting point, his philosophies & theories really go so far beyond that & can be applied to almost any arena.

Ok, I'm going to go explore a bit more & get my bearings here. Oh, I wanted to add a Shelfari tab on my FB (with Goodreads you can do that), but I didn't see a way to accomplish it. All I saw was a tie-in where you jump from here to the FB site, but then you have to list all your books all over again - it doesn't seem to import them. Please advise if you know anything about it. Thanks! :)

Which book are you talking about? I do miss reading to the kids. One of the best compliments I had was my first year at Chaparral reading to a special ed class. Time was up and I had to get back to the library. I was reading Island of the Blue Dolphins. The teacher told the kids she would finish the chapter when I left. One boy said, "You'd better read it just like she does." Wow! That was 25 years ago. Okay, I think you must be talking about Gordon Korman.

Eight years ago I went to a reading conference sponsored by Scholastic in the San Diego area (beautiful). Gordon Korman was one of the speakers and I have been a fan ever since. What a funny guy. I had some of the Island series at Chaparral, but never got around to reading them.

In third grade I won a reading contest--over 90 books in 6 weeks. The teacher got tired of me coming up to tell her about the book, so she just wrote them on my note cards without a synopsis! I won a book that I still have, one of those orange biographies: "Betsy Ross, Girl of Old Philadelphia," with an inscription and date (1957--yikes). When she gave it to me she told me not to read it before I got home! She also let me read to the class, an indication of a career to come!

You are way more intellectual than I am! I do have a good one my clerk from Sierra recommended--The Mindbody Prescription. It's one I keep--the rest I try to recycle!
