Cindy / Coffeelatte

I'm aiming to finish 50 books in 2009. I'm on 11 as of June, 2009.

I love books but haven't had the time this past year to read much as I would like to. So I'm going to change that. I always have stacks of books waiting to be read. Most of the time I am reading 3 or 4 books simultaneously.

I particularly like really good... more »

  • The Stand

You might think from viewing my bookshelves that all I read are Stephen King books...I have a lot of favorites. The Stand is truly one of my top reading picks, and I've read it several times. There are rich characters, a not-so-distant future that seems quite possible. It's a big book, but I couldn't put it down, and the people he wrote about in this one seem very real. Make sure you get the "complete" version. Sure to creep you out.

PS - The opening musical segment of the TV miniseries captured the feel for this one perfectly. Eerie, gruesome, fated to happen...

Well worth a read, as far as a conspiracy theory mystery thriller goes. There was something realistically frightening in aspects of the storyline. I won't peg this as one of my all-time favorites, but it's a book that I've thought about a lot after finishing it.

Agreed with all the previous reviewers -- this book is beautifully written and will stay with you for years. It's one I've shared with friends and we all have found it compelling and moving.

  • The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll: The Search for Dare Wright
    • Rated 3 stars

Although in the end, I found this book strangely unsatisfying, I felt compelled by the details to keep reading. Dare Wright's life was certainly a sad, strange one. Definitely a dysfunctional family story...it is quite fascinating and somewhat disturbing.

Read this long after it had peaked in popularity...and was surprised to find how rich and compelling this was! It's a favorite, and the movie (while "good") did not give me the same satisfaction. Agree totally that there are some slow parts, but well worth reading!

A Wrinkle In Time is a book I cherished as a young person, and have often recommended to friends with introspective children. Loved it, and still do.

This is a strong book, and another that people either love or hate when they read it. For me, there is much that I found true to life -- and many passages that have stayed with me over the years since I read it. I think Atwood is a fantastic author, and have recommended it to certain friends when I think they would appreciate this one.

  • Edward Gorey's Dracula: A Toy Theatre: Die Cut, Scored and Perforated Foldups and Foldouts
    • Rated 5 stars

I was lucky enough to buy this, new, on a super sale. Since I adore Edward Gorey and vampires, what could have been any better! Lovely little drawings and a magnificent toy theatre. If you can find it, get it for your collection!

I've collected Gorey for many years, and this is a pretty good overview of the artist and his quirky ways.

  • The Handmaid's Tale
    • Rated 5 stars

Reading this book when it was first released may have made a bigger impact on me than it would if I stumbled across it today. All I can say is that there are sections that have haunted me for years.

I think Margaret Atwood was quite intentional in how she structured this story. She writes about what the characters are experiencing rather than describing what they are feeling. The reader is the one who "feels" tension, fear and revulsion. Some readers perceive this as a man-hating book, I see. The Tale is much more about class opression (and, perhaps, religious persecution) than it is about gender.

Becoming a young adult in the 70s, I still remember being told I couldn't obtain a credit card in my own name because I was female. I also was warned when I got married about the dangers of maintaining my original surname (my "maiden name"). Current events in parts of the world sometimes remind me that we really aren't that far removed from the ways described in this book. In my mind, it's not far-fetched to think we could step backward (or move toward) many of the societal restrictions that Atwood writes about.
