    Gauteaux, Thompsom, Woodrell, AND Pierre? I never find people who love those writers! How about Stewart O'Nan, Tim Sandlin (his latest is great), Colum McCann ( especially his early stuff)? Just read Roddy Doyle's "Deportees," which is fantastic.

    Simic is my favorite also. Do you read his essays? Sometimes he amazes and gets me searching out the subject of his attention. I may not agree with his own findings, but it unpeels another layer for me.

    I read and studied Catch-22 in high school, and loved it then, but have never read it again. I'm one of those people who find a sign of true love for a book is re-reading it, sometimes many times. I have not read 'Vernon God Little' - so I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm reading 'The Almost Moon' by Alice Sebold at the moment - have you read it? (PS: sorry about the long absence - its summer here in Australia and I've been away on holidays)

    many thanks for your reply. It somewhat reflects general feelings. Unfortunately I haven't read the book and i realize that it's a big misfortune for the one who wants to have a deeper understanding. Though, I will try and hope not to get "castigated")
    A person with big potential finds himself suppressed by meaningless routine and the bigger the pressure the more hostile is the response. So one day or another it happens: a more or less deeply thinking individual finds a channel for his sublime energy and even common sense cannot stop this chaotic blow-up.
    Either stupid or ridiculous. ANyways I hope this could make you drop some line)
