Although I m stuck in the 19th century, I try to keep up with the times. The only problem is, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Chekhov and friends set the bar so high that the new guys don t seem to be able to get over it. Well, Vasily Grossman may have, but there is not much of his writing available. How about Solzhenitsyn? Is he over-rated as a writer because of his great courage as a man? Maybe.
Who can match the giants of the 19th century? Hemingway and Woolf, probably. How about Fitzgerald? Graves? Lawrence? Remarque? Wells? Conrad? Shaw? Hesse? Huxley? Proust? Joyce? Orwell? Sinclair? Mencken? Kafka? Ginsberg? Mailer? Faulkner? Greene? Wright? Nabokov? Updike? Sartre? Camus? Asimov? Heinlein? LeGuin? Butler? Steinbeck? Faulkner? Palahniuk? Pamuk? and lots more? I love em all, but... Really?
Just try to read as much as possible and hope for the best.
